What high level of cruelty? Are you just adopting that as an assumption?

Maybe ther was cruelty, but I don't know that, not having seen even one intolerable sentence verbatim. I'm sincerely interested in whether you've heard a recording or seen a transcript or encountered clobber-quotes in context.
