Were the attendees upset that the “nobility” of suicide was condemned? Or that the “certainty” of heaven for the deceased was not assured? Hard to know just what the issue was?
For years Catholics have believed that suicide was a mortal sin that must be avoided. I have at times called attention to their belief when counselling against suicide.
Have seldom, if ever seen a “good” death by suicide.
Suicide, like abortion, like euthanasia, is murder, and failing to make that point is one of the things that leads to copycat acts and suicide clusters, to which adolescents and young adults are so pitifully vulnerable.
Please have compassion for moody and emotionally fragile young people who are endangered every time there is a suicide in their high school or college community --- and especially when the suicider is sentimentalized as being now in perfect bliss (which makes it sound like a win-win), or portrayed as a noble figure too good for this cruel world.
But I think many will will neither recognize the objective grave wrong he did, acknowledge that he has enhanced the suicide-risk to everyone who knew him, nor pray for his soul's salvation.
And you call that mercy?
Priest sounds mental and the Coach sounds mental. The end.
It's so easy to see right through this cheap rhetorical tactic.
Pray for the self-slain boy, And while you're at it, pray for the predator priest.
You who are the soul of mercy.
So it’s a homily,not a eulogy-———he still shouldn’t have said what he said.
.
Notice, I asked a question. I did NOT state it as fact. Please reread what I posted and update your reading comprehension!!!
Do you allow people living in open adultery (or even polygamy) to Holy Communion?
Or perhaps not.
Either way, very interesting.
I would also add that suicide very often runs in families - I think of the Hemingway family and Zelda Fitzgerald’s family who, generation after generation, committed what my family used to call “The Dutch Act.” Mariel Hemingway is active in educating families about this phenomenon. I have no problem with a priest, pastor or rabbi speaking about the terrible consequences of this act as long as it is done with a degree of sensitivity. I think people who describe this as “cold” are simply looking to complain.
Please clarify: you think it’s wrong to abstain from sex with the person you’ve been committing adultery with, in order not to repeat the sin of adultery?
I had to look it up .. Homily is a coordinate term of eulogy. As nouns the difference between homily and eulogy is that homily is a sermon, especially concerning a practical matter while eulogy is an oration to honor a deceased person, usually at a funeral.
I guess only heroic, incorrect priests speak any more of repentance and salvation.
It’s sad that in your relentless Javier-like pursuit of “The Roman Religion” you come very close to giving aid and comfort to the act of suicide.
And what makes you think that someone who commits suicide is NOT mentally disordered?
The survival instinct and the will to live are so strong, that anyone who would consider taking their own lives is essentially mentally disordered.
Uh, no, I’m a happy confident person. And certainly not one who would murder the beloved relative and friend of untold persons, which is what the coward did. Forget that he was a piece of shit, he was their piece of shit.
Eulogies are not permitted at Catholic Mass. The coach needs to be beaten with a bag of door knobs.
“Eulogies are not permitted at Catholic Mass.”
—
By the priest, but a family member or friend can eulogize the deceased.
Suicide is self-murder. “Thou shalt not murder” is in the 10 Commandments.
I can’t wait to see all my Jewish friends and family members in hell, then.
Hey - will Jesus be there?
What a cold, unforgiving, uncaring religion Roman Catholicism is that at this family's darkest moment a Roman Catholic priest kicks them in the spiritual gut. The position espoused by this idiot priest and you is a bold face, contradictory, and false Roman Catholic teaching when compared to the PROMISES OF CHRIST found in the New Testament. 14As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; 15so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.
Your response is not fitting or correct. First, you can only presume that this person had indeed become born again, which is unlikely seeing he was a RC.
Secondly, the only faith that the Bible teaches is true saving faith is that cast their whole-hearted repentant faith upon the mercy of God in Christ, trusting the risen Divine Lord Jesus to save them on His account, by His sinless shed blood. (Rm. 3:9 - 5:1) And that will characteristically follow Him, and repent when convicted in their heart that they failed to do so.
Thus when one fundamentally acts contrary to this, such as not providing from his own family as he could, then it is declared that "he has denied the faith." (1 Tim. 5:8) And thus we also have warnings against having an evil hard of unbelief, in departing from the living God." to "draw back into perdition," (Hebrews 3:12; 10:38,39) and "entangled again with the yoke of bondage," thereby making Christ "to become of no effect," "to profit you nothing," being "fallen from grace." (Galatians 5:2,4) For while we can take no credit for faith, and the obedience of faith which God enables and motivates us to do," (Phil. 2:12,13) we can choose to no only sin but harden our hearts at God's correction, which He works so that we will not be "condemned with the rest of the world." (1 Cop. 11:32) Thanks be to God.
And presuming the person was rational, morally cognizant and culpable for his actions, then committing suicide is a terminal denial of saving faith, though in some rare cases it may be out of a longing to be with their Lord and Savior.
Yeah. Thats what I got out of it. Lousy headline.
Indeed, but this is the NY. Post, which uses such as click bait and then seeks to entices us with racy photos.
