The early US space program employed some of the best engineers and scientist from the US and German scientists who came over after Hitlers defeat. Putting them to work for us gave us an edge that helped us stay ahead of the soviets during the Cold War, and prevented them from getting captured by the soviets.
Without doubt the Germans were technically very advanced and we were lucky Stalin did not get all of their rocket scientists.
