Commentary: Canada's CBC is the latest radio outlet to ban "Baby" as offensive. Who to believe radio programmers, or actual feminists? There is one group, and one group only, that should be crusading against the performance of Baby, Its Cold Outside in public: vicious maiden aunts. These treacherous protectors of niece-ly chastity have no coalition in 2018, so far as weve heard. (Speak up and say your piece if youre out there, Auntie Lame Society.). So the campaign against Frank Loessers 1940s classic has been left to others not so much feminists, as rumored, since most whove thought much about the song in context at all know that Baby, Its Cold Outside was actually a witty, ahead-of-its-time avowal of women owning their own sexual agency.
No, the would-be ban is being led by that most deeply progressive group of all: adult-contemporary radio programmers. A handful of them, at least, have decided its time to go out for a nice holiday troll by declaring Baby, Its Cold Outside dead to them
followed by the inevitable online poll that will lead to a reversal and reinstatement. We can only hope some of them will stick to their guns and maintain the boycott: Its been far too long since radio pulled any Beatles- or Dixie Chicks-smashing stunts; what could be more heartwarming for the holidays than a nice community bonfire with AC listeners burning their Michael Bublé/Idina Menzel duets?
I knew the war on radio would continue to get worse once a certain 1910 Fruitgum Company hit was no longer being played.
Several still may be. But not one particular song of theirs.
Reminds me of a Seinfeld episode...can we go back to 1969?
This will keep on until everything of the past is destroyed: statues, songs, books, films: anything that does not fit into the narrow and shallow, politically-corrected narrative of the moment. This is communism in action.
It IS cold outside.
Indian Giver? The Washington Redskins could change their name to the Washington Indian Givers or...
Yep. Nor do you hear the Cowsill’s hit on the radio.
Next up:
“Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer” banned for celebrating Elder Abuse.
Leftists have no sense of history or sense of humor.
Nice to see a younger Red Skelton.
What’s left? Bambi, Cinderella: racist homophobic? coming to a legacy near you. No foundation left unturned.
I agree in principle about the snowflakes, but I’ve always despised that song.
Hey, my local radio station is all “Christmas” music now.
Which is great.
However, I’ve had enough of the “Mr. Grinch” song. It was funny for awhile. 30 - 40 years ago. YMMV
Besides, it’s hard to dance to. :)
Loved both of your comments.
Rock on!
I loved Red Skelton.
I think I remember him most from the late 1960’s to early 1970’s(?).
Don’t remember. Back when funny was actually funny without sounding like a locker room. IOW, suitable for the whole family.
I miss those days.
Is there anything that is not sexist, racist, homophobic, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. /r
Btw, it is cold outside. Any snugglers available. :)
J/K :)
Wishing an early Merry Christmas to all!
My deal with it is that it is in no way a Christmas song.
Identity politics is ruining comedy. I heard about an SNL comedy writer being booed of the stage at Columbia University. When they turn on their own, you know things are bad.
Is it the word “baby” that has all the knickers in a wad?
“Sticky, Sticky”? ;^)
