Yeah, he was a heavy drinker, but drinking the hard stuff was hidden from his friends. We only knew about the beer he would drink at the bar but he also drank at least a fifth of vodka per day on top of it. His system shut down from withdrawal from alcohol on the 12th day of his 30 day sentence. This was almost 30 years ago but I remember it like it was yesterday. He told them at the jail he was sick from alcohol withdrawal but they did nothing. Basically the cops killed him as much as the alcohol did.

Be careful about cold turkey. DTs can be deadly.

My wife is an ER doc and they literally prescribe Miller Lite to ease someone off alcohol. I don’t quite know the procedure, but it’s like drink a ML, then drink water or Poweraid.

I have no idea what is going on in your house, but I wish you well.

Alcohol is turned in part to a chemical like formaldehyde and held in the liver until all the ethanol is transmuted. Then the form. is released into the blood stream. THAT is what shuts down organs during the DTs, if memory serves.

It depends on the type of alcohol. Quitting for me means not sleeping for a couple of nights but I don’t drink liquor. If I have to drive at night, I don’t drink. I don’t day drink.

Go to rehab and quit your drinking cold turkey. Nothing will get better as long as you have a drinking problem.

You also need to leave/divorce your husband. Your drinking is NO EXCUSE for him beating you up. Contact a local battered women’s shelter and come up with a plan to safely get away from your husband.

Your children are adults, you do not need to support them financially. You must conserve your money for getting treatment for your alcoholism and getting out of your abusive marriage.

I don’t think it matters what kind of alcohol (excepting that is obviously harder to get really drunk on many beers), it’s a factor of how drunk you get, how often, and how long you were drinking.

I just know a serious drunk needs to ease into being clean.

The details I leave to professionals.

I avoid drinking Sunday to Friday and keep it easy because I go to shut Friday night and early Shabbos morning. Too many friends have ruined their lives.

Plus I’m a big guy and dance on the edge of max weight for the ejection seat. Nothing like booze to add fat (on me, anyway).

Battered women’s shelter. They will provide you with a counselor who will generally do a full assessment, including get you help with your addiction.

You have to break the cycle, and to break it you just have to start breaking it. Not going to be easy, but you have to begin.

Women’s shelter.

If you are drinking 6 beers a day or 5 glasses of wine a day, that is a LOT different from drinking a quart of vodka a day plus other alcohol.
Alcoholics usually die when they stop eating and start living off liquor. Many alcoholics are also taking medication that damages their liver.

you’re welcome

we do our best

she can solve her problems ... but she has to get clear of any serious physical abuse EVEN IF she has to stay with safe friends or family for awhile

and
she CAN and MUST get off the booze, it is a quick temporary escape from life’s difficult problems.....and is very understandable......but it leads to nowhere good!
She CAN do these things!

Reviewed your replies and am struck by how much your views resemble my alcoholic friend’s!
Trust the rehab. It will let you make a good life for yourself.

Your husband has no right to hit you, he can always just leave. Look forward to rehab, you want this.

Then you; too; need to leave your abusive husband Mrs. Mith!

(or is it Mr. Smith with an abusive wife??)

Not being coy, my female friend sounds just like the OP in many, many ways. Something about a need to be innocent constantly bubbles through. Don’t know if it’s a cause of the alcoholism or an effect.
And it’s Mr smith.

I know a lady like this as well; but she has no booze to blame it on.

(I'm a mister; too)
