Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto and local immigration advocates Wednesday called for a united effort to oppose proposed federal rules that would deny green cards to immigrants if they use Medicaid, food stamps, housing vouchers and other forms of public assistance.
The mayor and others said the proposed rule change has spread fear among Pittsburghs legal immigrants, who are reluctant to apply for public aid programs even at the risk of losing homes and suffering health problems because they worry they will be denied visas.
What were talking about right now is nothing more than hatred, Peduto said. Its hatred of those that look different, pray different or come from a different part of the world. My message is very clear: Get involved. Let any of your elected officials know that they have to speak out. If these laws were enacted, would your family be in this country?
Federal law already requires those seeking green cards to prove they will not be a burden or public charge but the new rules detail a broad range of programs that could disqualify them.
The Department of Homeland Security has said that current and past receipt of certain public benefits above thresholds would be considered a heavily weighed negative factor in granting green cards as well as temporary stays.
The proposal will clearly define long-standing law to ensure that those seeking to enter and remain in the United States either temporarily or permanently can support themselves financially and will not be reliant on public benefits, the department said.

Absolutely they will. Outside Pittsburgh Police “zone”, the municipal police simply do not have the numbers to deal with illegals (picture Northern Regional Or Conway or even Cranberry having to deal with hordes of illegals). The numbers are not there. They would very quickly be calling ICE in. I reside about 10 miles from the AGH / Butler Co. line. In the summer I see illegals (yes, they stick out like sore thumbs) and I call local ICE with plates of the cargo van they arrive in at the local giant eagle to pick up their weekend goods and or cash that weekly check.
Pittsburgh is too Catholic for him to run as openly gay.
Or at least it was.
Democrats can’t lose in Pittsburgh. The last Republican to serve on City Council was in 1934, and that hasn’t changed even with a change to election by district. Some of the worst hacks have run against qualified candidates for Congress and other offices and won, just because they had the D next to their name, and the way to get the Dem nomination has always been by faithful service to the party and the elected officials, who have rewarded their followers handsomely.
He needs the blue hair voters.. the City is full of old blue hairs, (allegheny county is (or was)) second only to something like Dade County, in terms of their elderly as a percentage of the population.
As long as he wants re-election in this area, the open secret will continue...
Can’t forget all the unions either...:
Plumbers AFL-CIO
Opearting Engineers AFL-CIO
IBEW
Boilermakers
Laborers
And D has them pretty much in the hip pocket.
Those folks won’t care if he’s biting pillows, but the old folks... you can propagandize it all you like, but they will never accept it. They are dying off... and the kids propagandized in the 90s and beyond that this is just no big deal will not care.
Totally agree.. Just saying why there is such a stranglehold on the city.
You always used to need blue hair voters in Pittsburgh.
But with this tech boom the city is experiencing an influx of Millenial Techies who are bringing San Francisco values with them.
It ain’t your Babushka’s Pittsburgh anymore.
The influx is overstated, you cant win in Pitt without the blue hairs... not yet anyway.
He’s been turning us into the gayest-friendliest city on the planet, and the blue hairs voted overwhelmingly to re-elect him.
if they don’t already have visas then why are they still here? Deport them!!
Blue hairs pull the D lever period. He goes open.. many will stay home or he will be taken out in a primary
Or somebody could “out” him. But personally I find that practice despicable.
