(Pittsburgh Mayor) Peduto calls for united front to oppose federal rules on immigration

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto and local immigration advocates Wednesday called for a united effort to oppose proposed federal rules that would deny green cards to immigrants if they use Medicaid, food stamps, housing vouchers and other forms of public assistance.

The mayor and others said the proposed rule change has spread fear among Pittsburgh’s legal immigrants, who are reluctant to apply for public aid programs even at the risk of losing homes and suffering health problems because they worry they will be denied visas.

“What we’re talking about right now is nothing more than hatred,” Peduto said. “It’s hatred of those that look different, pray different or come from a different part of the world. My message is very clear: Get involved. Let any of your elected officials know that they have to speak out. If these laws were enacted, would your family be in this country?”

Federal law already requires those seeking green cards to prove they will not be a burden — or “public charge” — but the new rules detail a broad range of programs that could disqualify them.

The Department of Homeland Security has said that current and past receipt of certain public benefits above thresholds would be considered “a heavily weighed negative factor” in granting green cards as well as temporary stays.

The proposal “will clearly define long-standing law to ensure that those seeking to enter and remain in the United States either temporarily or permanently can support themselves financially and will not be reliant on public benefits,” the department said.

The Steel City inches a little bit closer to becoming a sanctuary city. Hizzonner seems to have a beef with the idea of Trump steering the green cards to people who are productive and who don't become a burden on society by signing-up for welfare.

A poll on the site currently has 89% opposed. Calling your voters a bunch of hateful racists is NOT good politics.

But he's a Democrat in a town with an 8:1 registration advantage and will surely run unopposed. So he can get away with it.

This guy is a creep. He’s an embarrassment to those of us living in Pittsburgh and it’s environs. Always trying to get his name out there to make himself some kind of demo big shot. There was a poll in the Trib this morning and 80% of the participants didn’t agree with him about his statement.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, As an American citizen and as a citizen if the State of Pennsylvania I demand that you follow the law of our Nation and of our State. You are a mayor of a Pennsylvania city. You are not an elected member of Congress. You do not write our laws or decide which laws will be followed in our State. Do you job for all Pennsylvanians and Americans!

Sir, you're an idiot. My great grandparents did not storm the gates at the border, throwing rocks at immigration agents while waving the Honduran flag. Comparing early immigration by those who wanted to become American citizens is VASTLY different than those who are coming here because they see America as stupid enough to provide a free lunch forever. Getting up to $3400/mo in aid without having to be a US citizen is stupidity and you, sir, are at the head of the line.

My grandfather immigrated, legally, in 1899. One of the things he had to prove upon entry was that he had the means to support himself without help from taxpayers or he had a sponsor who would support him if he fell upon hard times. I don’t believe he considered the requirement ‘hateful’.

The real lowdown on this:

Foreigners here on various visas (or even illegally) who hope to ever obtain a Green Card are getting off of welfare so as to not harm their chances.

Getting people off of welfare is cutting-off the air hose for the Democrat Party and their legions of supporters holding patronage jobs in the bureaucracy.

The guy I’m thinking of had a suit on his dumpy pear of a body, longish hair and a dopey droopy mustache.

In the photo in the article Peduto is sporting a shabby gray beard. Usually he is clean-shaven though.

"“What we’re talking about right now is nothing more than hatred,” Peduto said."

Asshats overuse of the "hatred" label is so tiresome.

This guys a pillow biting arse hat....

Pittsburgh proper is only a city of about 300k last I checked... and is only 56 square miles (approx)...

Peduto likes to think he’s important, but in reality, the city is not even a 10th of the population of the Pittsburgh Metro area, and you better believe if illegals start congregating in large numbers in this area, like they do out in other places, the local municipalities will happily be calling ICE

He’s not even originally from the city.
Grew up in a fairly cushy suburb. I know people
who know his mom. There are certain things about
him still in the closet that might explain why he
is doing his best to turn Pittsburgh in to San
Francisco on the Monongahela.

He grew up in Scott Twp, which is a stones throw from my house... I know all about this putz...

He’s only in the “closet” in his own mind.... His sexuality, just like McClatchy’s, is one of the worst kept secrets in town.
