On Monday, my wife woke up with a total loss of hearing in her left ear. Looking online, it said to treat this as an emergency so she went to the ER.
They admitted her to the hospital and she got a CAT scan and MRI to rule out a stroke or tumors. Apparently, it was caused by virus.
She finally got an appointment with an audiologist toady who, after tested, said she has zero response in her left ear. She was given a referral to an ENT doctor on Monday for possible steroid injections directly into the middle ear. Very Painful. Her other option is a hearing aid in her right ear that will help her brain interpret a stereo effect and maybe a cochlear implant which could cost up to $100K.
Just wondering if anybody has ever experienced this and did any of your hearing ever come back after treatment.
Obviously, my wife is freaked out.
She sees her first ENT on Monday. That was the soonest she could get in.
The audiologist she saw today actually has a PhD in the field and she seemed to be pretty sharp according to my wife.
The problem I have is my wife is by herself in California as I work in Alaska full time. So I only get the information second hand.
Great link.
.
Yes, both her ears are clear.
Turned out she produced prodigious amounts of ear wax.
The ENT said to get her a WaterPik to flush her ears out daily.
Didn't get the details on what, other than warm water, is used.
Thank you, I will let her know your experience.
So sorry to hear about this.
Any idea the origin of the virus?
Will be in my prayers, friend.
This happened to my neighbor. I think she was in her 70s at the time. I believe they thought it was a virus and put her on antibiotics or something. We were very worried. Good news is that in a few weeks her hearing returned 100%.
My husband has Menieres disease. It is under good control and his hearing loss has returned to near normal. I remember one of his doctors saying that they know very little about the cochlea.
Its early, there is much they can do!
Please tell her not to freak out. I have had this and my hearing came back fully. If it ever comes back go straight to the ENT. The sooner you begin the injections the better.
My wife seems to think she may have had a mild case of Mumps about a month ago. The side of her face was swollen but she figured it was from sinusitus.
She took her elderly aunt to a hospital in Sacramento and she thinks that may be where she got it. She was immunized as a kid, didn’t think you could get mumps after that but what do I know.
Good link
Thank you
Isnt this how RUSH lost his hearing?
i think Rush lost his hearing from taking Oxycontin.
The ENT said to get her a WaterPik to flush her ears out daily.
I thought I was the only person to do that. But only on the weakest setting!
Good to know.
That may give her some hope in her case.
prayers for you and your wife...I hope they can find something helpful.
Sometimes those home remedies don’t work so well, and can actually make it more gooey and worse in there.
When you go to a good doc, they have tools to scope it out, and scoop it out.
I’m not a doctor, but such a sudden onset seems to suggest an acute issue that will, hopefully, be resolved easily. I wish you and your wife the best.
Har, 3 points!
No experience even remotely like that in our family. You’re both in my prayers. Praise be to God for His Healing!
Mine occurred shortly after bypass surgery. It has never come back. Have a friend who believes his was the result of taking Cialis for the first time. Claims that has happened with quite a few people taking ED type drugs.
