I have been a member of the SCA for decades. Although live steel is carried, this is typically not allowed. Demonstration of lance is right up there with the joust as a no-no.

You may not know this, but Virginia is an open-lance state.

Some people die playing golf, but not many. I would think that the same would be for those who reenact medieval equestrian activities. Bad luck.

Well that’s a freak accident and a real shame. Who expects to get impaled on a lance, even if you are playing with a lance? It must have been horrifying for the spectators.

Is it proper for a Medievel re-enactor to be flown to a hospital by anything other than a catapult?
Awful way to die, sincere prayers to the gentleman's family.

the metal-tipped lance hit the ground and flipped, stabbing Barclay's chest.I hate when that happens.

I’ve known Peter for many years. He was a great guy. A retired Lt. Colonel in the Army. This particular activity has been done thousands of times without injury. This was a terrible fluke accident. Prayers for his wife and children.

I like stories like this because it allows me to say “Jeez I’m glad I’m not that stupid”.

“A Medieval knight re-enactor has impaled himself with his lance during a performance and died.”
Just because it’s not real to you, doesn’t mean the lance isn’t taking it seriously.
Rough way to go.
