The Pentagon Wants to Make an Army of Virus-Spreading Insects. Scientists Are Concerned.

Pentagon research project called "Insect Allies." Funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the project involves using gene-editing techniques like CRISPR to infect insects with modified viruses that could help make America's crops more resilient. If a cornfield were hit by an unexpected drought or suddenly exposed to a pathogen, for example, Insect Allies might deploy an army of aphids carrying a genetically modified virus to slow the corn plant's growth rate.

According to the DARPA website, these "targeted therapies" could take effect in a single growing season, potentially protecting the American crop system from food security threats like disease, flooding, frost and even "threats introduced by state or non-state actors.

… Insect Allies, is less concerned. "Anytime you're developing a new and revolutionary technology, there is that potential for [both offensive and defensive] capability," Bextine told The Washington Post. "But that is not what we are doing. We are delivering positive traits to plants… We want to make sure we ensure food security, because food security is national security in our eyes."

Insect Allies is still in the early stages of development, and at least four U.S. colleges (Boyce Thompson Institute, Penn State University, The Ohio State University and the University of Texas at Austin)have received funding to carry out research. Bextine told The Washington Post that the project recently achieved its first milestone — testing whether an aphid could infect a stalk of corn with a designer virus that caused fluorescence. According to the Washington Post, "the corn glowed."

Booger. James knows the password for my PC. Now I’m going to have to figure out how to change it, and then I’ll have to remember a new password.

How did you even get in the 3rd sub-basement? I thought that had been posted off limits since the zombies got in the forge with the shower curtains.

I’ll bet someone switched the signs. Everybody thinks he’s a comedian ...

DP can’t tell me how to change my password. I want to cry, but I already have a sinus headache.

Thanks! I’ve been a fan of British drama for quite a few years and just recently rented the first episodes of Midsomer Murders as well as the first season of New Tricks. I’ve requested Father Brown, Grantchester, Death in Paradise, and have the first twelve seasons of Doc Martin as well as four seasons of Doctor Blake Mysteries. (There are only five seasons of that, and its from Australia. I hope they begin to make it again.)

If you’re on FB, there is a new British drama group that you may want to check out, as well.

And welcome to the Undead Thread!

Thanks. I love all of the old fashioned brit series, and Love and have all of the Miss Read books, both Fairacre and Thrush Green as well as her bios and childrens books and others.

They are grace filled and quiet reads.

I read the book a very long time ago so I will request it. Thanks for the suggestion. I also want the Inspector Lynley series, and Murdoch Mysteries, as well as Vikings.

What did I do before I found this library system? There are several main libraries and I don’t know how many branches in six towns. So its just a matter of days before you can get what you want.

“Rosemary & Thyme” was really enjoyable, but there were only two seasons.

This library has a large DVD section, and if I could stand up long enough to go through each set of shelves, I could probably find a lot of good British dramas. But they don’t separate the British drama from American movies, so I’ll have to plan on standing for 15-20 minutes. Difficult.

Do they have an online reserve system? In both my county systems, they will pull items to the reserve shelf, even if they were sitting in the stacks in the same library.

I didn’t get into the reason I spilled the coffee. I will probably never open a shower curtain without significant trepidation ever again.

See #6315. Yes, they do the same thing here. If someone requests books or DVDs the library will do a computer search to see where the requested item is, and will put it on the reserve self. I think I have about six or seven, now, and have two more episodes of Foyle’s War and two episodes of New Tricks to get through before Saturday.

Tomorrow I have to go into St George, but I will use a couple of hours before leaving to watch a drama.

Which is why I write my passwords in a notebook. You could put it on your phone in the “notes” part, and lock it. It seems each website wants a different type of password, so one password isn’t going to fit all websites.

Makes it tough for people like me, with compromised memory function.
