The Pentagon Wants to Make an Army of Virus-Spreading Insects. Scientists Are Concerned.

Pentagon research project called "Insect Allies." Funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the project involves using gene-editing techniques like CRISPR to infect insects with modified viruses that could help make America's crops more resilient. If a cornfield were hit by an unexpected drought or suddenly exposed to a pathogen, for example, Insect Allies might deploy an army of aphids carrying a genetically modified virus to slow the corn plant's growth rate.

According to the DARPA website, these "targeted therapies" could take effect in a single growing season, potentially protecting the American crop system from food security threats like disease, flooding, frost and even "threats introduced by state or non-state actors.

… Insect Allies, is less concerned. "Anytime you're developing a new and revolutionary technology, there is that potential for [both offensive and defensive] capability," Bextine told The Washington Post. "But that is not what we are doing. We are delivering positive traits to plants… We want to make sure we ensure food security, because food security is national security in our eyes."

Insect Allies is still in the early stages of development, and at least four U.S. colleges (Boyce Thompson Institute, Penn State University, The Ohio State University and the University of Texas at Austin)have received funding to carry out research. Bextine told The Washington Post that the project recently achieved its first milestone — testing whether an aphid could infect a stalk of corn with a designer virus that caused fluorescence. According to the Washington Post, "the corn glowed."

True dat. And therein lies the first clue to the puzzler.

I think I have checked/eliminated everything else. No pata stuff, all sata so disconnecting is easy. I should be getting the startup screen even if drives are shot. I get no display so can’t get to setup even. Substituted video card as first thought. No speaker on Mobo but I have a small piezo plugon for the mobo header pins which I plugged on to see if I got any angry beeps - nada. One would think that I should get at least a display on screen telling me ‘you’re dead, Jim’ even if it wouldn’t get to POST but there is no video output at all. And it is the ‘no display’ thing that has me thinking I’ll be doing an autopsy.

Power supply checks good, but I plugged in a spare to verify. So, that’s where I am right now. I can continue disassembly and swap out cpu but that gets a bit more involved since I have water cooling on this beast. That probably will be the next step, although as I said having to dig this deep into it gives me a perfect reason (or excuse) to do an upgrade since the one BIG reason I can’t play with this machine is because when I take it offline (or even reboot for the ever popular Windoze Updates) I start taking flack from those downstream on the network.. ;-)

And FWIW I seem to remember that article on repair shops. Always had a spare ‘test’ pata cable around after that.. (Of course since nothing I have uses pata now - or in the future since it’s considered ‘legacy’ and not even included on new mobo’s - I presently have a slew of ‘spare’ pata cables should you or anyone need one.. ;-)

Assuming you tried multiple monitors and multiple monitor cables.

Is this debice new-fangled enough to have a dedicated monitor slot? I can’t remember if you can troubleshoot those by putting in an old “any-slot-will-do” video adapter and seeing what you get from there. Also, I’m assuming there isn’t an old on-board monitor port that you had stopped using and the BIOS might have reset to send everything to that port.

Last thing I have before you get to a possibly fried CPU is RAM. If you have extra RAM to do everything you want to do you might try one card at a time. A bad SIMM or SoDIMM or whatever could make for a bad day.

"If you threw the rock from the boat into the pond, would the water level raise or lower?"

At the beginning of the experiment, the weight of the rock is displacing an equivalent weight of water.

At the end of the experiment, the volume of the rock is displacing an equivalent volume of water.

Less water will be displaced, unless the rock is pumice.

The monitor is also connected to my Linux box - has both DVI and VGA inputs, VGA connected to Linux box, been using DVI on this card. A bad dvi/vga cable should still let it attempt to boot, there would just be no indication. I get no indication post powerup that anything is happening other than the DVD noising through its startup headhunting. Monitor is good, so using a replacement video board should identify if it was a video issue. Mobo uses PCIE and board is in a x16 slot. I could try the other x16 slot I suppose. The mobo has indicator leds that light different leds as it steps through POST. They are not ‘stepping’. All four of them come on at power up and do not change. The USB ports are not initializing - no led on the mouse.

There are 4 8gig ram cards. Went through them one at a time since it is highly unlikely - but yes not impossible - that all four cards developed an issue simultaneously. Machine should show some life if any one of them was good when plugged in one at a time- nada.

No on board video so no other output or BIOS setting, but if that were the case, you would think it would still show those leds stepping up to the point of flagging the video. And as far as I know the ‘beep’ codes are still in the bios so I should be getting some audio indication after I hooked up the ‘speaker’ to the header.

I do have one or two suitable processors I could plug in but that involves undoing the liquid cooling which while not impossible is a bit more involved than removing a heatsink and lifting the lever on the socket. (That in itself gives me permission to get a new mobo/processor. ;-)

Thanks to the late Igor, I understood most of what you two were talking about. The parts I didn’t understand, he could have explained to me. For a nano-second, I missed him. Then I came back to reality.

Thanks for reminding me there are other things in life outside the four walls of this apartment. :o])

The Morning Floof looks rather pensive, in a marmaladish way.

Good morning. I’ll be taking a shower in a minute and then trying to figure out why the DVD player won’t.

I really need to be able to watch movies. I can’t handle the TV fare any longer. I’m still feeling kinda puny, and I don’t like that. I want to get some things done. Like finish with the black file. And take some things to the thrift store.

So much to do and I don’t feel up to any of it.

Kitteh lives in Florida and doesn’t have to get up if he doesn’t want to. Best wishes with the DVD player. I support several teenaged geeks to run electronic devices.

I had to learn how to do a lot of things as a military wife, so I’m all I’ve got for electronical things. And plumbing things and even carpentry things. :o]

Shower first.

Ta-DAH!! “Father Brown” is now playing! Woo-hoo! I swapped out the spendy LG DVD player for the cheap little no-name thing that Charlie gave me several years ago. He had gotten it as a freebie, but hadn’t the knowledge to set it up. The LG was hooked up via HDMI, and wouldn’t work, no matter where I hooked it up. (Three HDMI ports) This one uses the A/V cable and it works just fine.

The hard part was pulling the TV table out, now that the black file is to the right of the desk.

Now, I need to go make the bed and do the steroid thing.

Thanks! Now I’ll have to figure out some way to cut 8” off the length of the TV stand, or get a smaller one. Like a bedroom end table... I think, when I take the things to the thrift store, I’ll see what they have that I could use instead of this wide and heavy thing. (Faux marble top.)

Maybe you could just exchange the larger piece for a smaller one at the thrift store.

I’m putting off having a shower until after I take Pat to school. There should be hot water again by then, unless Tom has a surprising attack of wakefulness and gets in the shower.

OK. I’m almost out. I have had electronics on a plug-in be so bad that the MOBO couldn’t process, which is why I suggested some of the tips. I have had the process of evaluating whether any video was available just get stuck (no, I didn’t put an HP analyzer on it, just assumed that’s what was happening) so the BIOS couldn’t continue its boot and light LEDs.

I didn’t realize you had a KVM. Did you swap which machine was tied to which port? Maybe the KVM is doing you wrong.

The one I have is very heavy, and I can't lift it by myself because of the length. I don't even know if it would fit in the back of the BB SUV, and I can't drive with the cargo door open. I'll have to see if someone from the church can move it for me. I can slide it and lift one end, but I can't carry it out the door, much less, lift it into the truck.
