The Pentagon Wants to Make an Army of Virus-Spreading Insects. Scientists Are Concerned.

Pentagon research project called "Insect Allies." Funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the project involves using gene-editing techniques like CRISPR to infect insects with modified viruses that could help make America's crops more resilient. If a cornfield were hit by an unexpected drought or suddenly exposed to a pathogen, for example, Insect Allies might deploy an army of aphids carrying a genetically modified virus to slow the corn plant's growth rate.

According to the DARPA website, these "targeted therapies" could take effect in a single growing season, potentially protecting the American crop system from food security threats like disease, flooding, frost and even "threats introduced by state or non-state actors.

… Insect Allies, is less concerned. "Anytime you're developing a new and revolutionary technology, there is that potential for [both offensive and defensive] capability," Bextine told The Washington Post. "But that is not what we are doing. We are delivering positive traits to plants… We want to make sure we ensure food security, because food security is national security in our eyes."

Insect Allies is still in the early stages of development, and at least four U.S. colleges (Boyce Thompson Institute, Penn State University, The Ohio State University and the University of Texas at Austin)have received funding to carry out research. Bextine told The Washington Post that the project recently achieved its first milestone — testing whether an aphid could infect a stalk of corn with a designer virus that caused fluorescence. According to the Washington Post, "the corn glowed."

...No Mansfield Bar?

If you meant "bra," the answer is: seems to me, with that much class, she didn't need a "bar." I mean, look at Gina -- green-eyed monster, there! LOL!

Yesterday, my friends from Alaska showed up again and took me to “lunch” at Outback, which was actually supper for me, and as a result, I was too wired to sleep right away and then I woke up at 2330 and here I am.

But, as is usual, I haven’t just been sitting. I printed out the rest of my New Nephew’s genealogy, and I’ll begin to punch holes in the pages and place them in the binders. Yippee.

Back to yesterday: When DeRay and Darla brought me home, they gave me a dressy outfit, three pairs of leggings and five tops in the clothing line Lularoe. This stuff I could only have drooled at any other time. Now I need to find a pair of boots...

They also gave me three pairs of leggings for my “neighbors.” Yeah. Right. Only one I know of would wear them.

A Mansfield Bar is that dangly down bit in the back of a truck to keep a car from going under the truck and shearing off the top of the passenger compartment, and the tops of the passengers.

Ah. Thanks. I’ve seen those but had no idea what they were called.

The lack of one of those actually was responsible for my younger sister, who hasn’t spoken to me in nearly six years, to call me. There was an accident on Tuesday morning on highway 95 between Searchlight and the Junction, where a car took out the two rear axles on a semi. It evidently reminded her of the car accident I was in many years ago. No matter. She called, and that’s what counts.

Everybody should have a personal dragon.

Well, last month mine started spitting flames at the neighbors dragon. Then this little, yappy, miniature dragon (why do people even have those?) started getting into the mix. And it turned out its owner didn't have a flame-proof leash so it got away. It was a real mess.

Some people should just not be allowed to own dragons.

I am hearing stories this morning of 4-5 hours on busses headed to West New York (AKA New Jersey).

I thought those were for the driver to know when to stop when backing up to the delivery point.

Nope they were required after Jayne Mansfield was decapitated when the car she was in went under a truck. They didn't see it in a cloud of mosquito fog.

Curiously enough, they also banned DDT...

"Some people should just not be allowed to own dragons."

Ah, yes. There's that. Just be the first on your block to own a dragon, and that will take care of the problem.

OK. The name for the bar makes sense now. I always thought that was a tragic accident. Legend has it that her son, then five years old I think, was asleep in the back seat. I’ll have to re-check the dates on Wiki.

Our door has a card key access and several signs by the latch saying "Push." The receptionist still has to yell "push" a lot so I sent him this gem.

I just saw video from today’s graduation. It came across my Facebook news feed, but it was specific to the new uniforms for female Marines. :-)

It was freezing! But even worse for the Marines. I was huddled with four children but it didn’t help much.

Good morning, ‘Face. Elen USMC is up, but most parties will be having a lie-in, I’m sure. Mom will get up; she keeps early hours at home. However, there are no cats here to roust us out.

I’m wearing Bill’s Big Coat while I have my coffee. It’s nice!
