Yo Yo Ma: I would never play for Trump, not even on his deathbed
Financial Times (Subscription) ^ | September 7, 2018 | Laura Battle

But surely, I push him, Bach could give Trump a valuable lesson in humility; if he asked you to do a private performance . . . ? “Would I play for him on his deathbed? No,” Ma says. “I operate on the premise that absolutely anybody can change, and I also recognise that it’s possible that somebody may never change . . . I also think, just by observing the performance arts world, huge ego is very often matched by huge insecurity.”

Absolutely astounding how much freaks like this guy think about Trump. He lives in their heads rent free.

Likelihood of Trump wanting him to play a song - 0%

Amount of daily time Ma thinks about Trump - 85%

In which case, Yo Yo is ONE insecure guy. Pretty obtuse, too, I’d say.

Most of people in the world would not want Yo Yo Ma to play for them. Classical music is fit for a museum, a very European museum. I’m quite sure I could find 3 billion people in China and India to agree with me on that.

In my work over the years with the Seattle Chamber Music Society, I've come to know a lot of classical musicians. Most of them are hard leftists. I attribute this to the fact the a majority of them live and work in Manhattan. There are a few exceptions, however.

A concert pianist who shall remain nameless, now living and working in Chicago, is a follower of Ayn Rand, and we've had talks about the effects of a return to a gold standard.

A violinist who is a Drill Instructor in the IDF Reserves is (obviously) a staunch supporter of Israel.

Another violinist, who passed away from leukemia at a young age a few years ago, was a huge fan of Ronald Reagan. One of her proudest moments was performing at the White House with Rudolf Serkin accompanying her on piano. Rudolf had issues with stage fright, and she watched Reagan, an old trouper, put him at ease before they went out to play.

Not all of them are screaming libs.

I don’t understand why performers have to make public political comments. The only thing they will achieve is turning away their audience. The lower amount of people spending their hard earned money on them will decrease. All it shows is how stupid they really are.

Performers should focus on their craft and keep their comments to themselves.

He played at BO’s inauguration, didn’t he. So he’s invested in bashing conservatives.

I’m sure they’re not. One thing that strikes me, though, is that even though many of the brightest lights in classical music are Jewish, they are also liberals. And I have never been able to wrap my mind around the idea of liberalism in Jews, considering the history of their persecution by totalitarian regimes. (Of course, I’m referring to REAL Jews. “A Jew is one who is one inwardly.”)

With all due respect, you are 50% wrong. China is absolutely vital to the continuation of Western Classical music. Millions of Chinese are devoted students and performers of Western Classical music. Hundreds of Chinese occupy positions in the top orchestras of the world. Western conservatories are dominated by Chinese students of classical music. Some of the top instrumental soloists in classical music (pianists Lang Lang and Yuja Wang, violinist Sarah Chang, etc.) are Chinese.

With the declining interest in Classical music in the West, especially in the United States, China, after decades of being deprived of the ability to listen to classical music during the Communist cultural revolution, has become the lifeline of classical music and classical audiences. The same is true of South Korea and Japan.

...not some insipid Chamber music.

Them's fightin' words.

When I go, I want to hear the slow movement of Beethoven's Opus 132 String Quartet on my way out.

Okay, I couldn't find Yo Yo Ma doing that on youtube, but you can load this youtube clip into your phone, and keep it handy when the time comes for you to bite the big one / bite the dust / buy the farm / cash in your chips / check out / take a dirt nap / face the final curtain / give up the ghost / go belly up / kick the bucket / go six feet under.   (And make sure your phone battery is not already dead.)        :-)

(I think that clip contains the part you're talking about -- if not, you're on your own!   If it does, just play the parts you want to, and skip the rest!)

(When I go, I want to hear this one.)
