The Men and Women Serving in Our Military Are About to Get Their Biggest Pay Raise in Nine Years

The members of the United States military will receive their largest pay raise in nine years. Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act, granting the military a budget of more than $700 billion.

Members of the armed forces will each receive a 2.6 percent raise in their annual pay. Those with high levels of experience or in-demand skills will be receiving bonuses on top of that.

This new package also adds 15,600 active troops to the four major branches of the military, as well as the Air Guard and the Naval and Air Reserves.

In addition to increasing the number of military members and their pay, the package will provide our armed forces with new tools and weapons.

In total, $36.3 billion will go toward rebuilding naval ships, $41.2 billion will go toward Army equipment and infrastructure, and $40.8 billion will go toward aviation, including 77 new F-35 fighter jets.

According to the House Armed Services Committee, this package “makes key investments in other critical military capabilities to confront aggression and address threats around the world, including threats from Russia, China, North Korea and Iran.”

The new defense package also prevents Chinese businesses from working with the U.S. government because companies like ZTE and Huawei used “malicious technology.”

Beyond the increased pay and refined equipment for our troops, President Donald Trump will finally be able to put it all on display in his long-awaited military parade.

The president's military parade was endorsed by the Senate and House committees as long as parade participation does not limit military readiness.

Trump has been hoping for a parade to honor our armed forces since as early as 2011:

Nine years is an awful long time. What in the world happened that they would not get a good raise in nine years?

Give veterans and their immediate family members a check for $250,000.

My daughter who just got out of the Coast Guard will be annoyed that she missed higher pay. My other daughter who’s going into the Marine Corps will be pleased.

No, they got annual pay raises, it’s just that this one is the largest in nine years. Now if they’d give disabled veterans a raise.

Excellent news. Military pay raises are inevitably linked to federal civilian employee pay raises... and linked further to COLA increases for federal retirees.

In 1981Ronald Reagan gave us a 14.3% pay raise.

Today’s military is overextended and not meeting current recruiting goals to simply replace troops that leave or retire.

Highly qualified and trained people are leaving daily thanks to a better job market.

She’s supposed to go to boot camp in August. It will be miserable, but she spent four summers as a BSA camp counselor in coastal North Carolina, so it’s not like she’s never sweated or dealt with bugs. She has her eye on her A-School (oceanography/meteorology), which is in California.

14.3% pay raise! No wonder there is no money for welcoming in undocumented workers and their families and their sisters and their cousins and their aunts! Because the liar Reagan spent it all on imperialism and trying to destroy the utopia that was being built in the socialist countries! Reagan, the greatest disaster in American history, only approached by the arch-fascist, arch-imperialist Trump! (slobber, chew carpet....)

You’re welcome ;-). It’s a family tradition. Funny that it’s only hit the girls in this generation, but my cousin (a Navy nurse) was the first woman deployed on a aircraft carrier.

Best wishes!

When my oldest daughter was in Coast Guard basic, I sent her a card every day. I plan to do the same when the 2nd goes to Marines boot camp.

My cousin’s husband was the first Marine in the family. He ended up as a Catholic high school principal. My daughter, who is 20, will be the second.
