At age 17, Winters quit high school and joined the United States Marine Corps and served two and a half years in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Upon his return he attended Kenyon College. He later studied cartooning at Dayton Art Institute, where he met Eileen Schauder, whom he married in 1948.

Thank you for posting this, I never knew Jonathan Winters was a Marine.
One of my favorite comedians of all time. Will have to share that with my Marine mayor.

I love these famous veteran posts. The stories remind me why those folk are referred to as the greatest generation. And not only the soldiers of the era but the days when an entire nation of people worked together to defend our way of life.
I had no idea. Will be sure to tell my Marine friend who is a 100% disabled Nam vet. Thanks.
Thank you, I have a list of hundreds, some with very little info and some with a lot. Sometimes to get the full story I have to visit multiple sites. I was thinking of doing a July 4th marathon, we’ll see.
Good Carson Tonight Show with Jonathan Winters. The whole thing is worth watching, but the entrance must be seen, LOL.

The political segment starting at about 8:05 is fun!
I had a co-worker at one point who had been “hospitalized” at the same institution as Mr. Winters. I believe it was in Ohio.He was in because of a very bad PTSD from an auto accident. He recovered. Anyhow, he said Jonathan firmly believed he was from another planet..,take it for what it is worth.
You’re doing a very good thing with these posts .. thanks, and keep it up !
I can’t say I was a big Jonathan Winters fan. On the other hand, no way could you ignore him when he was on the screen.
Semper Fi!
It would not be hard to envision Winters as a DI or Gunner, along with R. Lee Ermy.
