The American Kennel Club maintains statistics and though it doesn't list percentage total population, it does rank the breeds in popularity order. It leaves out "mutt" which would probably be like 80% of the dogs anyway but of the pure bred dogs left, bull terriers are 60th in popularity, staffordshire terriers are 82nd in popularity, and miniature bull terriers are 115th. These three breeds are generally considered to be the ones we lump together as "pit bulls". Bottom line: there aren't anywhere near the top of the list even if you put them all together.
And a rings of slavering mastiffs as their guards.
Maybe because most of us go years in between "sightings" of pit bulls in our area. I have a friend who has two. I literally know nobody else who has one and I never see one out. This is in a very densely populated region - Philly metropolitan area - with lots of pets.
A person I work with had her dog maimed so badly by a pit-bull
at a dog park 2 weeks ago the dog was immediately taken to a
vet where it was euthanized.
The same dog attacked another dog the week before that - however it survived.
The owner said “It just gets excited some times.”
I have indeed met some very nice Dobermans!
Rottweiler, at typically twice the weight of the Pit Bull, have the means but not the disposition to raise havoc.
If I ever got a Pit bull, I’d name it Chet.
:D
That’s not what anyone was implying.
It was a comment made regarding a Dobe who saved me from a pedophile uncle.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
Yeah, but it’s hard as hell to conceal carry one.
No one is ever going to tally that or publish it, even if they did.
Dobes are the only breed of dog created solely for the purpose of guarding people from other bad people.
People have no idea the sheer variety of relatively exotic mastiff/ Molosser-type dogs here, now.
Of all crazy things, one day in Tractor Supply, I met a couple with two Boerboels.
Happily, they were responsible owners and the dogs were friendly and well behaved.
A Boerboel would simply swallow the average pit.
Wow.
They are literally *everywhere* here and I don’t live in anything remotely like “the hood”.
Far from it, in fact.
Very rural, Appalachia wilderness, more like.
;D
That's absurdly low. I might believe 7.5 million.
My wife and I breed beagles. My wife and daughter breed Dobermans. They show both at AKC confirmation shows like you see on TV.
I remember the first time I saw a Neapolitan Mastiff. It was 165 pounds. Its head was about 1 1/2 feet long. However, it was a big gentle slobber dog. Too much drool for me. He showed it at Westminster that year. It is one of the only Neapolitan Mastiffs on the show circuit. It made other mastiffs and working dogs varieties look small.
Well heck, why would you carry it concealed?
Having one is like an organic, warm blooded Squad Automatic Weapon on the end of a leash...:)
Much as I love all dogs, Neos are just fugly.
:D
I grew up with Beagles and various Coonhounds.
[Walkers and Blueticks, mainly]
I love the bell of a good pack.
I ended up with Dobes because of Divine Intevention and I’ve had them ever since.
The guy that won big at Westminster with the Beagle a few years back is the same “little kid with a pup” who went to my local kennel club obedience classes back in the 70s.
The dog at Westminster is a descendant of that little pup and even I could see what an outstanding specimen that dog was.
I was wildly happy to see he’s had so much success with his lines.
LOL!
Hrafn, the new boy, is a groupie magnet.
I take him shopping in dog friendly stores and never get anything done.
Everybody in the store has to stop and adore him and of course, he has to show himself off.
Every one I’ve ever had adored kids and so does he, but he’s taken it to a new extreme.
He seeks out pregnant women [even ones you would never suspect are pregnant] and gives their bellies a thorough sniffing.
He *knows* there’s a kid in there, he just can’t figure how to get it out so he can lick it.
