I live in Washington state, my friend.

It’s all about taking it up you know where out here.

Crap shoot hiring installs from big box stores. We see a lot of those. My husband owns his own HVAC biz. ABout 30% of them are done correctly. About 10% are asking for a disaster.

Oh and I forgot to mentio all the EPA and DEC regs you have to follow—proper disposal, yada yada especially with A/C and R22/ 410A refrigerant.

Ripped off. That’s about $2,000 for install.

We liked our tankless except in December/January, when the water supply was too cold. We had to reheat the water with a second tankless downstream before the shower.

Flush your water heater yearly and install a new element (the coil at the bottom of the tank)... especially if you live your in a hard water area

After five years I had to change out a Honeywell valve where the gears disintegrated. $40

Just bought a 50 gal. power vented NG water heater for $835 from a box store. A power vented water heater is one of the most expensive types. Got a quote of about $600 for install and removal. I thought the install cost was pretty high. I haven’t had it installed yet.

I’m gonna look up the model on the web after these guys leave.

I’m sure it’ll be pretty standard and not cost much more than $700...tops.

Too late now but next time shop around.

A 50 gallon water heater costs $500 and up at Home Depot. I install my own, but I can’t imagine labor costing that much. It takes me a couple hours to drain and remove the old one and install the new one. That company must be making $700 an hour.

We are all set. As mentioned earlier, hubs is an HVAC/Plumber/Contractor and we have a kinetico water softener system on our navien tankless. Only benefit of having a small biz in NY is you can buy the stuff wholesale.

This must be one of those “direct-vent” type units (using a double-walled exhaust and a fan to draw in fresh air)?

Depends on what kind of water heater you had installed as well. A hybrid electric unit would be about $1,400 from the orange store. I could see that costing around $2400 to install once you calculate the plumbing re-routing, code/inspection BS.

But if he installed a 5 year 40 gal orange store special, those things are like $300, you got overcharged.

I did one myself, 50 gal electic, AO Smith 15 year warranty model, was about $700 from Lowes, after I bought copper tubing, replaced 3 valves that were also bad, solder, flux, and all the other goodies to do the job right, I was under $850. I bought a higher end unit because they generally last longer.

If your plumber installed a high end unit with a long warranty and he had to replace a lot of pipe or re-route a lot of pipe, I could see it costing that. (And he sweat the pipe, none of that shark bite BS) I could see it costing that much.

If you buy the kind of water heater that has the curved intake line that stirs the water in the tank, they last A LOT longer.

I don’t but I live by my little lonesome, wash small laundry loads, and like short, warm showers.

That’s probably how I got the old one to last over 20 years. It was a Rheem 40 gal NG heater and came with the house. No problems til this week. Probably full of sediment by now.

And they tell people to swap them out every ten years. They lie.

I’m selling a previously enjoyed 75 Gallon NG water heater/power vented for $300.

Husband turns down more work with people who want a tankless and have hard as hell water with mega particulate. He tells them to see if they can get their water situation corrected first before putting in a tankless or said customer will be calling and cursing within 24 months. Tankless wholesale here (Navien) go for about $1400

I bought a thankless sized for two bathrooms, a dishwasher, and a clothes washer on amazon for $550.

I installed it myself, propane to code, replaced an old one in three hours.

In my area labor is a $100 an hour plus materials, expect a days labor for two people.
