I believe John Daly did this too during a US Open at Pinehurst. He was not disqualified either. Phil apologized. I’m disappointed in him yes, for letting his frustration get the better of him. The only thing to be said n his defense is that that course was impossible on Saturday.
“The only thing to be said n his defense is that that course was impossible on Saturday.”
As it was in 2004 when he finished second.

The two leaders were in 45th place starting today. It’s unfair that the course was playing five to six strokes easier when they played earlier today.
My son recently bought me some clubs and so we've played a few times but I've watched golf since Tiger put golf back into play.
There was something wrong with the cups all over the course.
A putt would be on line get with 3" to the cup with perfect pace and it'd turn left/right. Almost like they pulled up the grass around the cup when they set it.
Not excusing Phil but he didn't break his putter over his knee or throw it into the lake.
That putt was not like those I described but I didn't see the whole 4 rounds but any earlier weird cups could maybe set a frustration level.
Phil is good for the game and an exceptional golfer - to trash his career for a no harm-no foul goof when he was clearly out of the run would be unconscionable.
