The only thing to be said n his defense is that that course was impossible on Saturday.
...
The two leaders were in 45th place starting today. It’s unfair that the course was playing five to six strokes easier when they played earlier today.

The USGA official basically said the same.
It was more like 3 and a half a strokes difference ...... but even that is a lot!
Although I'm not an azinger fan, he summed it up best. The USGA goofed with pin placements Saturday not expecting the wind to come up and they were in poor areas for that weather given the quickness of the greens the wind dried them out and made them quicker.
