23-foot python swallows woman tending her vegetable garden

A 23-foot-long python has swallowed a woman in central Indonesia, a village official said Saturday.

The victim, 54-year-old Wa Tiba, went missing while checking her vegetable garden near her village on Muna island in Southeast Sulawesi province on Thursday evening, according to the village chief, Faris.

On Friday, her family went to look for her at the garden but found only her belongings, including sandals and a flashlight, said Faris, who uses a single name.

The family and villagers launched a search for the woman, and found the snake with a bloated belly about 50 yards from where her belongings were found.

The villagers killed the snake and carried it to the village.

"When they cut open the snake's belly they found Tiba's body still intact with all her clothes," Faris said. "She was swallowed first from her head."

(snip)

It was the second python attack on a human in Indonesia since March last year, when a 25-year-old man was swallowed whole by a python in West Sulawesi province.

They do NOT “suffocate” anything.

The constriction prevents the heart from beating and disables circulation.

It’s completely circulatory oriented.

The point is, they are very very careful.
Snakes eating broken bones is a problem, just like humans and chickens, snakes can suffocate.
That’s why they constrict or poison you to death - a nice, fully articulated corpse, all in one whole swallow!

Makes me think maybe if she wasn’t so vegetarian and was a little bit more carnivorous that might have been a good thing!

I could swear I read this same exact story a year or so ago—right down to the sandals and flashlight that were supposedly left behind...

I camped and tromped all over the everglades in my teen years.

You could not pay me to do it again.

I stand corrected ( well, self-corrected, since you didn’t elucidate). It appears that the current research indicates that constrictors kill by over-pressuring the circulatory system, killing by ischemic failure of major organs like the brain, live, and heart ( the heart cannot over come the high blood pressure caused by constriction and therefore often goes into arrest with minutes). Broken bones (ribs) may occur in larger animals, but are usually not seen n large numbers nor by intent based on autopsy.

My B-I-L, when a young missionary in Brazil & Paraguay, witnessed the dissection of a snake that had killed/swallowed a man , he said that the guy looked as if he was crushed like a soda can- but certainly there was no autopsy....
