Loved Bafferts first words after the win, it’s great to be an American and then praising God. (Paraphrased).

Nope. It has to be a “live cover”.

Not an owner.

They own 15% of the BREEDING syndicate. IOW, after he retires from running and starts breeding they get a slice.

So much ignorance of horse racing.

The TB Jockey Club requires real breeding, and even requires a photograph. Eliminates fraud, something that can’t be guaranteed at all with AI.

Genetic diversity: The likely result of allowing AI is that only the most popular stallions would be allowed to reproduce...

Now it makes sense.
Thank you.

The highest thoroughbred stud fee I readily recall was $500K a ‘pop’ and those were some years ago (imagine with inflation...). I think the tops at present is Tapit at $300k.

Secretriat gets far too much mileage out of that one race. Most “fans” don’t even know what else he did.

Cigar was NOT a gelding. He turned out to be rather sterile though, but no one knew until he had to start stud.

Would’ve been nice to have more AP but at least he finished out the year, and actually continued showing he WAS the best horse, not just for young 3yos.

American Pharoah’s stud fee started around $200k to adjust up or down depending on what he produces. Justify looks to be going to the same stud farm and will likely be similarly priced, give or take a bit depending on how he finishes out the year (Pharoah added a couple more prestigious races to his career before retiring).

You’re welcome. I didn’t realize until I read the article that AI has damaged the Standardbred and Quarterhorse breeds. I made a mental note to read more about that. It sounds like a cautionary tale.

It’s often surprising too to learn how stallion life is not always so swell - no pun intended ;). The overbreeding and sometimes shuttling abroad can actually be quite overtaxing.

I take it you are not familiar with thoroughbreds.

My wife’s family was in the horse business.

Fortunately Scat Daddy did breed for the 2015 season, so we’ll get to see one more crop of his three year olds next year.

Not many stallions are shuttling, and those who do only usually a change of ownership which means an occasional venue change.

It’s the mares who have to shuttle.

AI is also a conduit for fraud.

As a great all around champion, Seattle Slew might have been the best ever.... On the track, he won his Triple Crown, survived almost dying because of incredibly greedy owners...beat another Triple Crown winner. As a stallion, he produced champion after champion...he lived like a king for 28 years and he sure deserved it. Easily among the top 5 greatest ever.

Of course mares go to the stallion in the region. I was referring to those that shuttle to Australia or South America of which several notable stallions have, including American Pharoah. It can be tough to cover close to 200 mares (up to 3 a day) in a space of 3 months and then travel a distance to stand a season in a foreign environment.
