Surface Pro owner thoughts?

Posted on 06/09/2018 1:37:57 PM PDT by stuck_in_new_orleans

Thinking about getting the newest version of the Surface Pro. Anyone own one that wants to give their impressions? Please no “Windows sucks” or “Linux is better” or “MacBook is better” stuff please.

I have one. My second MS Surface tablet. I love them, a true PC in a tablet format.

Get one, you wont regret it.

Was there a issue with them overheating? Read there was a issue with that. Guessing it got corrected in a software update

I had a Surface 1, and am now still using a Surface 2 (going strong).

I love it. I use it with and without the keyboard, pen and touch. The pen works great, especially with OneNote.

The only shortcoming is that it doesn’t sit in your lap - it has a kickstand (it’s not a laptop).

I’ll buy a new one when this one dies.

My husband has a Surface Pro IV. It is lightweight and sturdy and you can balance it on your knees with the folding flap. He says. He loves it!!

I manage about a 130 surface pro’s at our company. They vary from surface 3/4. Generally, they are beautiful, well made devices. It just depends if you get one that won’t have an issue or not. Usually, you will know right away if the screen or battery is bad which is common. Microsoft is pretty good about RMA’s though. We stopped buying them because of a 10% failure rate which was flatly unacceptable. However, I still use a surface pro 4 myself every day and enjoy it. Just go into the purchase knowing that convertible tablets are still maturing as a technology and to not expect it to last as long as a laptop.

I got it to support my small business’ Office 365 and one-drive accounts.

I use both Macs and had also recently used Windows 7. Yes, its old, so of course with Surface Pro I had to re-learn a lot of layout and functions. anyway, it works fine with Office 365 and the one-drive.

there’s always some typical glitches one seems to experience with MS/Windows products. For example, it needed, several attempts to set up the thing. Installed a new keyboard font and it screwed up the text size of every program from word to outlook.

Anyway, I’m used to that with MS, so you muddle through. I still think Macs are more stable and functional, but Surface Pro is OK.

I had a surface 3 and the charging port went out and there is no other way to charge it. I wouldn’t get another one for this reason.

I used to deal exclusively with Windows machines for +20 years
I am now using a Mac laptop.
It runs flawlessly.
If all I could afford was a Windows machine, I’d favor the surface.
It is a pretty good Mac knock-off with some additional features.
Good luck.

Have Surface Pro 3. I love it and will definitely get another one if this one ever dies. I keep it on the breakfast bar in the kitchen - perfect for quick reference, shopping, instructional or educational videos. Also casting music around the house.

I’ve got an SP4. As a tablet it’s horrendous. The stylus in the OS is a novelty at best as many apps only support the touchscreen by allowing you to “press the buttons on the screen”. Orientation issues abound. Get the MS keyboard (an extra $100) which is, fortunately, very good and treat it as an ultra light laptop.

The only other issue I have is coming out of sleep sometimes the wifi won’t come back on or the camera won’t come back on (or both) requiring a reboot.

I wouldn’t get an I7 as the unit has heat issues and you’ll almost immediately end up in a throttling state.

Otherwise - it’s not a bad device.

What's the fastest way to get Freepers to say something you don't want to hear?

Tell them you don't want to hear it.

I have it I think it’s great.
However get maximum memory & solid state drive.
You will get much better performance if you do that & you’ll have fewer gripes.

I’m on my third, a Surface Book Pro. Can be used as a tablet or as laptop.

Runs the development software I need plus anything else I might run on my desktop or laptop so it is great on trips and at conferences.

Love it.

Have new surface pro. Love it. I tried another brand with windows 10 and found so many things difficult if not impossible. But surface pro is smooth and fast and intelligent. Worth every penny in my view.

PS. I don’t have the keyboard. Not needed in my view especially because it reads my handwriting Very well. I have written an article of several thousand words without a significant problem. Easy peasey.

As an ultra portable windows laptop it functions well. I use it for basic websurfing when travelling and it also functions as an emergency dev station for when I’m on the road too. The screen is too small to comfortably use as a dedicated code development machine so I don’t use it for that.
