The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.
Wow! That is all great Greeneyes! I’m so glad God has blessed y’all like this! As my Grama would have said, Y’all must be livin’ right. Congratulations!
Strawberries are slow to produce this year...
Thanks for the pic. Nice looking place.
Well, we try, but I really think it might just be like when God blessed a worthy servant and his descendants - had some powerful in the faith Christians in former generations.
I am so sorry to hear that. Prayers up for you.
Same here. LOL
We don’t eat much lelly either, so I usually make more syrup than jelly...sometimes not on purpose. :-)
We are FINALLY getting decent weather.
This year was so weird.
Snow right up until the end of April and then within two days, it was up to 80 and that was apparently, the date of the last frost. We were near to one only once since then.
I got my tomatoes and peppers in this past Tues, which is early for us. Usually, it’s not before Memorial Day. Even that extra week is a big help in getting them established and getting a good crop a little earlier than usual.
I have sauce tomatoes and have 454 plants and six beefsteak.
I hope to get a lot of canning done this summer.
I have found that keeping peas well watered makes a big difference if the weather is going to be really warm.
I know they tend to be cool weather plants but I’m beginning to suspect that the issue is more a matter of moisture than temperature.
I was losing a lot of peas and beans to critters too, at one time. Now I protect my peas by putting tomato cages in and planting a whole bunch of seeds in the middle.
Then I cut off enough of a length of chicken wire to go around the outside of the tomato cage and wrap it around.
Sine the chicken wire comes in rolls, it has a tremendous desire to stay that way so you pry it apart and let it spring around the tomato cage and it basically holds itself on.
The peas then grow up side the chicken wire encased tomato cage and they are supported and protected by it. I always get a great crop and they are clean since they are not dragging on the ground and it’s easy to pick the peas from any side.
454 tomato plants? Yow!- I find it hard to find enough time* to maintain a couple dozen! Plus I put in 8 assorted pepper plants, and I’m attempting to grow onions and garlic this year. Then there’s the “worm bed” - that generates worms for fishing (a quasi-garden activity?) The problem there is supplying enough “garbage” organic matter to keep the worms happy and plentiful (plus keep it moist during dry weather). We start off with big piles of leaves in early spring, which nearly disappear by July, even though I add more grass & leaves, etc. The “Alabama Jumpers” (night-crawler size, very active earthworms) are voracious (even tho’ we are well north of Alabama.)
*Ok, granted, we also have 9 free-range chickens, plus one adolescent chick. That’s more time I don’t have, but they’re my daughter’s pets that my wife and I mostly end up taking care of. That last should be 3 chicks, but my wife thought the chicks were old enough to free range, and a medium-small hawk got 2 of ‘em. I was heartbroken - such cute sweet little critters the chicks are... The hawk came around again today, but #3 stayed hidden, and the other chickens are too big for a hawk that size to mess with - I hope! It may be time to put the new scope on the .22 pellet rifle...
I concur on the weather: Winter hung on and hung on, and then all the sudden we are in the upper 80’s, even a few days 90+, with plenty of days with t-storms. All plants took off like crazy: There’s more mowing that must be done, than gardening that I wish to get done!
All I have been doing that is even close to gardening is taking care of the lawn and all associated (trimming bushes, base of trees where overgrown) with it . When I started the crawfish mounds were all over the back yard but no more after regular mowing and the yard is starting to look pretty sharp . If their are any fellow freeper’s who could advise me as to what perennial’s do well down here in Louisiana I would appreciate it ! Thank’s !
Great news. Congrats on the house sale!
Congrats on the quick sale of your Springfield house, Greeneyes. I take it this is a second house you’re relieved to pass on to another owner. I join you in wishing a happy Memorial Day weekend to everyone as we remember all who served. Hot and sunny and in the high 80’s in western PA. Picked up some red coleus plants for garden.
NO! Not 454.
Sorry. 45 tomato plants.
And that’s plenty.
I didn’t even see that. I just have two small plots.
ive been trying!
im even willing to hire adults not cheaply.
But I dont want to put an ad on craigslist, so Im just going by word-of-mouth. But so far no takers.
ohno!
45 is a lot! Thats about what I had last year and it kept me busy. Im trying to do less this year.
Oh, ok! I was thinking “that’s a farm, not a garden!” I may have 45 tomato plants total, as some are still in the “starter” pots — I have a surplus because I lost not one, this spring planting, not even any of the “doubles” and “triples” I separated into individual pots. Not sure what I’ll do with the extras, as I am just about out of fenced in space where the chickens would not tear them up ...
