STOKES COUNTY, N.C. — A Stokes County man took to Facebook on Thursday to draw attention to low teacher pay.
In the post, Nick Cols said he has been teaching for 10 years and loves his job but is struggling because he only makes about $1,715 each month.
The English teacher said his hourly pay comes out to be $6.69 an hour, which is roughly $1 less than North Carolina’s minimum wage.
“I know some will look at this and speak to the fact that I get summers off. I do. I get two weeks vacation here and a week there. I do. All of that is true. I, however, do not get paid for those days,” he said.
He goes on to say he and his wife, who is also a teacher, are struggling and “cannot pay for anything.”
Cols continues to say he can’t afford to attend the May 16 rally in Raleigh where teachers are expected to protest at the General Assembly when lawmakers reconvene for the legislative short session.
During the rally, teachers from around the state plan to lobby the legislature for what they say are desperately needed new state dollars for underfunded school systems.
To attend, he would have to take a personal day and forfeit $75 from his next paycheck.
“I want you to see what the people who are educating your children are being paid. The people who are writing Letters of Recommendation,” he said. “The people who are giving them the tools to achieve things that most never thought possible. The people who give themselves daily to wide swaths of kids.”

Well....see you don’t know that side of the story either. In some states, you could be talking about a minimum of $60,000 a year, with social security coming as well.
My brother brought up the topic of school bus drivers, and that you could get a terrific deal on healthcare insurance, and still collect $5k a year on some kind of pension as a bus driver for the school system.
The other thing you don’t know....is this guy just teaching two or three hours of school per day?
Go ahead and compare to an enlisted military member’s pay.
The only difference will be that the E-1 is actually useful.
Summer break, no work = no pay.
This guy is averaging out his 9 months work into 12 months.
My Father was an educator and during summer break he painted houses.
All the money goes to administration. My elementary school had a principal and a secretary. My Jr. High and High schools had Principal, 3 secretaries, and a boys and girls dean.
My daughter’s elementary school had a principal, 4 vice principals, and 6 secretaries. Then there is the school district administrators...
What does the Principal and school Superintendent make???

Here in Texas - it’s easy to pull in over 100,000 a year. While teachers maybe get 50-60 thousand.
My wife’s aunt and uncle retired from teaching public school their whole lives in Boston—as millionaires.
He is taking his 9 months of salary and averaging it over 12 months..acting like it is lower than it is or that he can’t work over the summer for some reason.
Teaching was seriously setup for women to handle while their kids were in school and so they could be off when their kids are.... it isn’t really setup to be a “career”.
They should really think about going year round and hiring some more competitive teachers....kids might actually learn something.
As from the office politics, I liked my jobs in public television but professional poverty had no virtues.
After a fair amount of time and sacrifices (paying dues),I got into better paying gigs.

And all the apes, snakes, and orangutans in the “administrative hierarchy” that “supports” the teachers? Union dues? What do they make? NEA lobbying? What do they make?
Privatize the schools, hire and pay teachers for merit.

I graduated in 1975. ALL of the male teachers and some of the female ones I knew took summer jobs. Some in house painting, light construction, driving detassling crews, some for the school district on textbooks projects, teaching summer school, teaching other classes for the park district, some lawn care businesses, etc. But back then in IL, it was probably more likely to be able to do that kind of work on a temporary basis, without unions shutting them down.
Several people with whom I went to high school became teachers, and have retired at or before age 60, with ending salaries in the $90Ks, at a minimum.
According to the chart, in NC for 10 years of teaching he should be making $3,300 to $3,700-ish spread out over 12 mos., depending on his degrees/certifications. So $1,700 sounds like a made-up number to me.
An E1 worked enough hours to average $1.56/hr in 1981.
These teachers are still in bed at 0430, and they work indoors with air conditioning. My heart doesn’t bleed.
