Important to distinguish between the Sects I think. Assad is Alawite, which is a minority muslim sect. Assad was a doctor of Opthamalogy. His older brother was the Heir Apparent, but was killed - Auto accident IIRC.
Assad was attending post graduate studies in London and was recalled to Syria by his father and entered Military Academy and began to be trained to take over the government, when His father died.
