Detectives are not officers.
As an ex uniformed Officer and later transferred to Detectives, I would disagree that a Detective ever considers themselves as anything but an Officer just because he is in plainclothes. Many Detectives get sent into robbery scenarios such as banks when a uniform would probably panic the gunman to start taking hostages or shooting ? They are all Cops no matter the clothes or assignment.

In common parlance, (going back at least a century) all law enforcement officials (regardless of rank) are consistently addressed by the public as "Officer".
(The same is also true in the acronym, "LEO"...)
Have family in police and they go from undercover detectives back to uniform, especially when they get promoted, if they are undercover they have to go back to the streets in uniform for a year.
