George F. Jones and wife owned Pen Craig , the last “cottage” pictured on the linked page. It appears that both the Strong and Anthon families might just squeeze into the place.

Cute house. My family lived in Newport in 1977-78, and we toured many of the great “cottages.”

May 9. My intellects must be failing. I find myself considering the propriety of undertaking a serious investigation of the financial feasibility of the Newport scheme!!! I know I’m a fool and can’t afford the luxury. George Anthon urges it strenuously. Ellie would be delighted. It’s close to the Rutherfurds. “Smash-traps” would save Ellie all trouble in organizing the menage. Opportunities for studying marine zoology unlimited. But the Monish!!!

“Smash-traps”?

I don't know. Maybe something to do with the horses and carriages he mentioned yesterday? I tried a Bing search and came up empty.

That’s kind of what I thought, but it doesn’t entirely fit the context.

May 10. Have been sour and grim, much exercised and exacerbated by the Newport question about which George F. Jones came to see me this morning. Am to make my answer to his proposition tomorrow, and I shall give up so tempting an offer with some reluctance. But I fear the Diva Pecunia looks unpropitiously on the project. At breakfast Ellie was, on the whole, decided against it. At dinner (with George Anthon) she was unshaken. I went off to Trinity Church vestry meeting, and on my return found George Anthon and Jack Ehninger here and a general revulsion of feeling. I don’t clearly foresee what I shall say to Jones, but I know what a sensible man in my shoes would tell him.

I still hope they go to Newport.

I toured the Newport “cottages” years ago and they are spectacular.

Some of my parents’ Navy friends were extras in “The Great Gatsby” in the early 70s. I forget which cottage was Gatsby’s house, but we visited it a few years later and the staff was still talking about the filming.

May 11. Called on G.F. Jones this morning at his new house in Twenty-third Street. . . . I reluctantly declined the equine bargain and the Newport cottage, and Jones and I condoled with each other over the frequent failure of projects the most hopeful, and exchanged assurances of distinguished consideration. . .

With Ellie tonight at Academy of Music. Heard The Messiah excellently well rendered.

I had a feeling that Mrs. S's opposition was a deal breaker. Especially since George was doubtful of the wisdom of such a costly scheme to begin with. I wonder if he will feel regret next time he dines at the Astor's downtown.

I guess it's back to Brattleboro, then.

I think P.J. O’Rourke lives in Brattleboro or nearby. Not George’s class of people, of course.

Hi.

My eyes aren’t as good as they used to be. Are those marianets in pictures 11 and 12?

Thanks.

No, they are views of the city of Lucknow in India. 11 is seen from behind a railing in “the residency.” The British residency, I presume. 12 looks at the city from the other side of a river.

Mrs. S was probably being prudent given the country just survived a financial Panic.

But Newport is lovely in the summertime . . .

It’s mighty warm here in Boring, NC, these days. I wonder if someone has room for me in Newport. I clean house!
