The Bobcat/Pinto had some stupid engineering.
The clutch involved a steel piston operating in an aluminum cylinder.
You can see the flaw. The piston carved the cylinder right out. Idiots.

I owned a Matador. Thought the styling was beautiful, still do. It had a GM engine, and the suspension rode very softly. The only problem I ever had with it was a faulty alternator. I’d buy it again.

That’s right up there with the original Chevy Vega, with the aluminum block and no cylinder liners.
It wasn’t a bad looking car, the ugliness was hidden under the hood.

Thank goodness I rarely see an Aztek anymore (finally).
Those were disturbingly ugly.

I never quite got the mechanical engineers on the slave clutch cylinders of the 60’s and 70’s? The linkage to the throw out bearing was so random, one could spend every weekend trying to stop the chatter. It varied with fluid types, outside air temp, vibration, seal ring wear, etc...
To: Fresh Wind
The Vega was a race car. The race was between the engine self-destructing and the body rusting out.

Had a neighbor who bought up blown Vegas and dropped Ford 289 in them and needed up the suspension, gears, and rear. He sold them like hotcakes.

They weren’t especially ugly, just boring......................

I once wanted to get hold of one of these models and convert it into a small pickup truck - cut off the back part of the roof and side glass of the back portion, and re-install the tailgate as the back side of the cab, lining the interior of the box with marine-grade plywood and finishing it in a high-quality varnish, and use it as a parade car. I've seen a Pinto-Ranchero conversion before. It used the original tailgate window as the rear cab window, a custom fiberglass molded rear cab wall and bed assembly, and a formed metal piece to cover the top of the original tailgate which remained in its original location. Pretty slick, right down to the faux wood applique on the sides.
The fiberglass parts kits used be advertised in some automotive publication - possibly Hemmings.
