New York City has gone through a lot of changes - and now people are getting a the chance to see what the Big Apple looked like more than 100 years ago.
The Museum of Modern Art released surprisingly clear footage of what life was like in New York in 1911.
The video, a part of the museum's June 2017 collection, was filmed by a team of cameramen with the Swedish company Svenska Biografteatern. The cameramen were sent around the world to take photos and videos of well-known places.

Odd. My granmother, born in 1888 in a small town in illinois, grew up in a world of horses and carriages. She also saw Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.
Mackinac Island in Michigan is horses only and it is really beautiful. I recommend it highly.

That is fascinating to watch, thanks. Love the clopping of the horses.

Mackinac Island is on my bucket list. Slice of Victorian/Edwardian life.
The Flatiron was only 9 years old in 1911.
What a stunning contrast! Pre-Liberal New York City looked like a pretty decent place!
Didn’t know we had soundtracks in 1911.
Some of the immigrant heavy areas, for example, Lower East side had population densities comparable to modern day Calcutta. The video was from the nicer areas.
No NYC - no McCloud.
Are any of those New Yorkers, besides the guy with the man bag?
Maybe the lady in the red shirt.
But I agree with your point; it’s amazing to see how people dressed even 50 years ago compared to today.
Back when people ate real food. No obesity
Real food + more expensive food + lots of walking.
I always wondered about the transition from 100% horses to 100% motorized. This is timed just about perfectly to show a fairly even mixture of both.
Fascinating!
And then the people walking right in front of the streetcars!
I guess they were used to the whole rhythm of the thing.
Proof positive that if you want to really f**k up something, then you put Liberals in charge of it. Guaranteed to work every time.
The Slob Brigade is out in force. Good thing that we can’t smell the picture.
