10 Degrees: MLB's enormous attendance drop due to bad weather or something far worse for baseball?
Yahoo ^ | April 16, 2018 | Jeff Passan

It’s just April. Because this is baseball, that is an entirely reasonable explanation for the problem. And so, too, is the weather, the nasty, Mother Nature-must-be-pissed-at-someone sort of frigid that canceled half a dozen more games Sunday afternoon and is threatening to set records for postponements.

And yet one look at the numbers across Major League Baseball shows a grim landscape. Not in home runs (which are down) or strikeouts (which are up) but attendance. Which isn’t just down – it is down precipitously, enough that one league official expressed concern that this isn’t simply a manifestation of the weather but something deeper and more troublesome for the game.

“I’m worried,” he said. “The tanking scares me.”

" saw the Mariners’ Robinson Cano wearing a ski mask in 27 degree Minnesota weather on 7 April"

It is cold but you can't always go by that POS.

Until 1970, if you were an adult American male, you inevitably played a lot of baseball, mostly with your friends without supervision, and had an inherent understanding and enjoyment of the game. Sorry but today’s adults simply did not have the same experience. They rarely if ever played the game unless their parents enrolled them in Little League or T ball. They have at best a casual familiarity with the game. The fan base is shrinking. If you listen to sports radio, those Latin American immigrants who are articulate enough to call seem to still love the game. Fewer native born Americans love and really understand it.

Call balls and strikes electronically. The technology exists, use it.

This one is huge for me. The reason I don’t like basketball is that the refereeing is so terrible and, frankly, difficult.

Chicago vs Atlanta, cold, rain howling wind and MLB apparently refused to cancel the game.

Sacrilege! Umpires are what makes baseball the most "human" of all the sports.

I get everyone saying Miami is not a sports town, but I agree I don’t think that’s it.

I’ll just announce it to all of you...I’ve given up on pro sports. It’s only a matter of time before the nonsense works its way into all of them. It has dawned on me over the last couple years how much time, money, energy I invested in pro sports. I had several shirts, tee’s, hoodies, on and on and on. NFL pushed me outside. I camp, bought a UTV, boat, joined a large lease with 365 access, etc. I spend my weekends outside and away. I now take my kids along too, my son has gotten into archery as a result.

Anyone think there are more like me that just said forget it all??

Yeah, and there's not much fun in sitting in the stands yelling "Yer mother was a fruit bat!" to a robot.

meh...

The financial bottom line for MLB is good enough. So much so that the going rate for an ‘every day’ player tops $10 million.

Plenty of young stars that will probably play for another 15 years, and they’re far from all Hispanic. Corey Seager, Cody Bellinger, Alex Bregman, Byron Buxton, Mookie Betts, etc.

I couldn't agree more. The invasion of technology into baseball (and all sports) is ruining the game.

Don’t forget the Yankee’s selling Aaron Judge to Boston (so that they can finance a broadway play on the side).

The Miami fanbase is totally p!$$ed at Derek Jeter and Marlins management.

They are tearing down the team and unloading big contracts in exchange for prospects and draft picks. Most notably, they traded Giancarlo Stanton to the Yankees.

Personally, I think the strategy is correct. As constituted, the Marlins were missing too many pieces to become a consistent playoff contender and were carrying too much payroll to do anything about it. Stanton's contract, despite his talent, is ridiculous, something only the Yankees and maybe the Dodgers could afford. If he pulls off an Astros style rebuild, the fans will come back.
