Wasn’t it McCain that had that dogfight on the Forrestal that almost sunk it. I think he fired a stinger into the plane across from him. I was told if he had destroyed one more aircraft that was in flight at the time he’d have been considered a North Vietnamese ace.

Hey Badger, I want my fighter jocks to be demanding and elitist. I never had a problem with them during my 4 years in Germany. My ADA battalion had batteries at Hahn, Spangdahlem, and Bitburg.

While we had a healthy rivalry at the O'Club, they all knew that the Army units got them over the hump in Tac Evals in the area of Base Survivability. Stuff like that mattered in the late 70s, when the Cold War was still on.

It was my experience that new AF officers weren't handed anywhere near the responsibility that butterbars had in the Army. Within my first four months in Germany, I was handed the reins of both Chaparral platoons: 40 men, 8 weapons systems.
