A massive bulk carrier has crashed into an historic mansion on the shores of Istanbul's Bosphorus Strait after its steering equipment became locked, Al Jazeera reported quoting Turkish state media.
The Maltese-flagged Vitaspirit, a 225-meter (740 foot) vessel en route from Russia to Saudi Arabia has been moored in the Marmara Sea for investigation, with the owners of the mansion demanding proper prosecution against those in charge of maritime traffic.
Anadolu Agency said that there were no immediate reports of casualties, but footage from the crash showed extensive damage to the historic seaside mansion located under the Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridge, one of the three crossings between Istanbuls Asian and European sides.
The building's roof and upper floors collapsed and videos showed the basement slumping into the water. The vessel was extracted from the mansion with the help of tugs but the Bosphorus was closed to shipping traffic in both directions, NTV television said.
The Hekimbasi Salih Efendi Mansion has stood on the shores of the Bosphorus Strait since the 18th century and is used to host weddings and concerts.
The 225 meter long, 74269 dwt bulk carrier Vitaspirit allided with the shoreline on the Bosphorus under the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge near Istanbul, Turkey. The Vitaspirit had become disabled after its rudder became stuck. Unable to steer, the bulk carrier ran against the shoreline striking the 18th century Hekimbaşı Salih Efendi mansion. The mansion was nearly destroyed, but there were no reports of injuries or pollution released from the Vitaspirit.
Bosphorus Strait has now been renamed “Bosphorus Crooked”
Bash For Us!...................
With Smashed Potatoes...............
That mansion looks to be built over the water. Crazy setup it would have to be 30-40 ft of water there to allow the ship to get that close.
Awesome
But that might have killed a Brown Floater Fish, know to the state of California to be environmentally friendly and they decided it would be cheaper to destroy the mansion instead.
Didn’t something like that happen in Caddyshack? The character played by Rodney Dangerfield dropped an anchor on Judge Smale’s boat?
Wow.
Tugs need to be on-hand for just these types of problems.
Boats break. It’s rare, but it happens.
The tugs need to control them when they do.
It’s the Bosporus...............
Yup. Back in the day when I went to marine diesel tech school, they had a foreign ship come to port at Sturgeon Bay Wis for a minor repair. They denied a harbor pilot that was supposed to run the thing through the bridge and guess what happened.
The bridge was down for weeks.
I actually work in this industry and can attest that crews are no longer allowed to smoke hash while onboard.
Totally unfair, I know, but life is full of unfairness.
My dad has a boat and I always smoked a little pot before I went onboard (as a far younger man, of course) because if I didn't I'd throw up the entire trip.
Local news, this morning, showed a passenger ship plowing into a building in Honduras.
I smell a lawsuit.
LOL!!...Yeah you did!!!
Obviously theyn ave a different meaning for the word “mansion” than we do.
I know nothing about it really.
So the mansion was only 200+ year old? Oh, well. We have ghettos that old here...not in necessarily good nick, either.
And scratched his anchor.
