I'd say it's more likely that the U.S. would have ended up a lot like Canada today -- a weak (on a global scale), loosely unified country where much more power is vested in the provincial/state governments.
Ironically, in many respects Canada is probably much closer to what the Founders of this country envisioned than what the U.S. has become since the Civil War.

The U.S. or the Confederacy. Having rebelled, allegedly about "state's rights" how long would they have put up with orders from Richmond?

I'd say it's more likely that the U.S. would have ended up a lot like Canada today -- a weak (on a global scale), loosely unified country where much more power is vested in the provincial/state governments. I believe this scenario would have persisted for awhile, (long enough to keep us out of WWI) but I predict the Southern Confederacy would have first acquired all the border states, and over time, the territories and eventually the rest of what remained of the United States.

That’s an interesting thought. The revolution might have been unnecessary in the long run. British North America would extend down to Mexico, but nothing would have radically differed from what we have today.
Everything that rises must converge.
