Yes, John Bender called her "pathetic" and "queenie", looked up her skirt, and still got her in the end. People also called each other "fags" and "faggots" without any regard. It was the 80s.
FWIW, my 8-year old son uses the above words. I don't know where he got it from. Not me. Such words out of my mouth would cost me my career.
...and then she got fat, ugly and apparently stupid.
Who?
If Miss Molly is "troubled", that is her problem.
The truth is that women select men, not the other way around. The stereotype of the sexually aggressive "badboy" exists because many women find it attractive. The other female character ignores Bender and is attracted the wrestler who had more respect. So, I don't think Hughes was making a universal statement, but he didn't chicken out either.
Too bad she didnt see the film for what it is.... the pathetic tale of a bunch of punks who think it is cool to break all the rules, engage in dope smoking and casual sex. All things that lead to healthy relationships and long term goal achievement.....not
One of my favorite movies that could never be replicated today is “The Bad News Bears” original (not the remake.)
Imagine a movie where the lead drives around a bunch of kids in an open convertible while smoking a cigar and drinking beer out of a can.
And then there is this famous line.
“Jews, spics, niggers, and now a girl?” - Tanner Boyle
or this exchange,
Tanner Boyle: All we got on this team are a buncha Jews, spics, niggers, pansies, and a booger-eatin’ moron!
Ogilvie: Tanner, I think you need to be reminded from time to time that you are one of the few people on this team who is not a Jew, spic, nigger, pansy or a booger-eating moron. So you’d better cool it or we may be disposed to beat the crap out of you.
Did it occur to her that the film addresses those issues and the characters learn why those things are wrong?
Im not very impressed with her indignation, because it only extends to the typical sjw views of today. Im also not impressed with how intelligent or thoughtful she sounds. I just get the impression that they not only want to control how everyone thinks now, they also want to somehow change how people thought in the past.
WHO?
I saw Molly Ringwald on Broadway in a revival of Cabaret. She played the female lead and was bland and disappointing.
Watched Blazing Saddles as the only whites in the theater. Never heard more laughter in my life, every time the word nigger was said.
Couldn’t she just...not talk?
Not to worry, Molly. That will be corrected in the remake, which will eventually happen — because Hollow-wood is out of original ideas.
That said, regrets — we’ve all had a few.
Boys don't do that nowadays???
I think this is another example of a washed-up former teen actress looking for some publicity.
She is probably troubled because she hasn’t had any roles since then, and was largely dependent upon her very cute looks at the time. Big mystery solved.
Then, by all means, she should stop cashing the residual checks.
The headline is not the essay. A thoughtful piece by Molly Ringwald. Was an is a gorgeous person and smarter than the average bear. Recommend you read the original New Yorker story and decide for yourself, FReeps.
Man, I miss the 80s!
Oh gawd....
