Facebook scans the contents of messages that people send each other on its Messenger app blocking any that contravene its guidelines, it has emerged.
The scandal-hit firm, still reeling from revelations surrounding Cambridge Analytica, checks images and texts to ensure they are in line with its community standards.
While the intentions behind the practice may be well-meaning, the news is likely to add to users' concerns over what the social network knows about them.

That’s the whole point of being on “The Information Superhighway”. That’s why we do it. The internet was never intended to keep secrets. YOU keep secrets by encryption. The conduit was made to be public.
Interesting opportunity however for some pretty effective disinformation and geometric differentials of content. My brother reads bizarre stuff to Alexa. He will read every third word in passages from three books or news articles of contrary views or opinions. It freaks stuff out. He wont get spam for a week after doing it.
Never had a Messenger message not delivered, that I know of. To think that they own the company, wont let you have the FB app without driving you insane to get the Messenger ap, every keystroke you make on either one is, of course, captured and used for their profit.
Duh.
Imagine the challenge for the armed forces in securing military intelligence, while at the same time letting troops have the right to modern forms of communications?
I hope Jim never wants to use anything any of use has written here to make more money. Once you hit “POST” it belongs to Jim. Everything on your about page and everything political and social that a buyer could glean off the information stored in basic html on Jim’s backups.
Kinda like trusting Trump with all your private info vs, trusting Obamma with it, ey?
Hopefully Jim wont turn FreeRepublic into FakeBook! I feel pretty secure here as long as I have 1 or 2 canoe accidents a year.
The European Data protection Law GDPR which goes into effect in a couple of months will create a big problem for them as all personal data they have currently will come under a very stiff penalty for abuse of it and much more
Take a look at it, in the business side of things companies who do not comply are in some deep doo doo and with the volume of the material they already have compliance will not be cheap
Hoisted on their own petard as it were
Note about Jim and his practices which are great, this is a European Standard for Data Protection.
Just assume any activity on the internet is being scanned, even here, PM’s are no different.
“”Not mine. Never will.
Just Stay off social media””
This is social media and you were just scanned.
Educated liberals are in deep denial.
A Lawyer in my volunteer group never did believe any of my caution with respect to fakebook.
He now claims fakebook is only a risk if you took their personality test (???). Everyone else is oay(???)
WTF! Fakebbok/twitter/google are all about collecting your content and metadata to generate a dossier about your preferences, likes, dislikes, lifestyle, political preferences > your personality.
This dossier is sold to advertisers and markets. The big win is selling your data to politicians who seek to manipulate folks into voting for them
They have learned much from studying the ChiCom Great Firewall.
Who the heck didn’t know this???
Are you known at home among your friends, family and employer as Dusty Road?
“”Are you known at home among your friends, family and employer as Dusty Road?””
No but I can assure you the internet knows my name, age, sex, political leanings and the same for anybody associated. Let’s not be fool’s.
I hear ya. I’m just saying that I and probably most average people like me are NEVER going to run for office or anything like that.
If they want to read all about me and old friends posting stupid funny stuff to each other or fishing pics, they would be wasting their time.
But trust me, I do understand your point. On the whole, I dont trust much to facebook.
Joe:
Hope you haven’t insulted any fish. :-)
They dont know mine.
And even if someone does know. My family are not involved nor is my job nor are my friends
Thankfully, I never fell for, or joined any of the social media crap. FR is the only place I’ve registered with. It’s been my home since 1997. And it will be my home until the day I die.
LOL!! Well... maybe a few here or there...
