A castle move in chess is usually in preparation for a major offensive assault on the opponent. It projects a major, well protected, force into the center of the board. It frees the mobile pieces, bishops, knights and the Queen to move in on the opponents defenses from the flanks and can also provide added strength for a direct frontal assault. It is not merely a defensive action.
