Sacrificing a Queen is extremely rare for obvious reasons...but Bobby was beyond mere mortals when facing the board. Not advised for anyone seeing only a normal number of moves ahead. But in principle, to view castling as a defensive maneuver is incorrect, or at least incomplete.
It joins the power of the rooks in a tremendous magnified force projection across a large swath of the board, most notably the center. It will often occur at the point that you or your opponent is prepared to launch a major offensive - a kill shot, or to get to the end of the game. Its like waling off your enemy and covering your assault forces. It happens before you strike.
