Broward County Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie introduced the new measures in a letter sent to students' families this week.
Students who survived the Valentine's Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, will have to get used to new security measures when they return from spring break next week including clear backpacks and ID badges that must be worn at all times.
Broward County Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie introduced the new measures in a letter sent to students' families on Wednesday.
In it he said there would be additional security at the school, students would be given clear backpacks "at no cost" and students would be issued a new identification badge that they would be required to wear at all times.
Over the past several weeks, we have received many inquiries regarding our Districts efforts to fortify the Marjory Stoneman Douglas campus and expand safety protocols at the school, the letter read. We want to assure you that the safety and security of our students and employees remain our highest priorities.
The clear bags would be the only backpacks that will be permitted on campus, and Runcie said the school district is also considering installing permanent metal detectors and the use of metal-detecting wands.
Kyra Parrow, a senior at Stoneman Douglas, blasted the plan on social media, tweeting that clear backpacks (are) just the illusion of security.
Other students lamented the loss of privacy.
I know having clear backpacks will help with security, but now all my privacy will be gone, Lizzie McNichol wrote on Twitter. I wish it didnt come to this.

“Ive never seen a transparent backpack and did not even know they existed.”
It’s sort of like a giant rubber. I’m sure no one will figure out a work around.
Wow. I never would have guessed there would be a market for something like that.
Color me heartless, but I am sick of seeing and hearing from these kids. And they will be invading DC on Saturday. Thankfully it will still be cold, just not bitter cold like it is at the March for Life in January.
When colored backpacks are banned only criminals will have colored backpacks.
“Marjory Stoneman Douglas students to get ‘clear backpacks’ as safety measure”
What else could we expect from a bunch of New York democrat transplants?
Yeah, no way around the need for metal detectors.
So how big was the bag holding all of the gear that Cruz had? This held a rifle and body armor among other items. I surmising that he geared up on campus and walked right on in.
Clear backpacks have been a mandatory requirement on many campuses for years.”
I guess we’re backward here. Never heard of it.
It’s sad there IS a market, a demand for that. That we can’t even trust our kids to use a normal backpack.
See post 23. They’re common as dirt.
I’m glad you never heard of them. You probably live in one of the few sane and normal places left in the country.
How about putting a cloaking cover that gives the appearance of a clear backpack over the real backpack.
Why not make them all wear clear clothing.
Then women teachers could have an easier time finding the boys they want to bang.
Kill 2 birds...
Yeah, I do as a matter of fact. Think if I was a kid in one of these leftist-run high schools I would drop out and do a GED or some alternate path to graduation.
Don’t say colored backpacks. They are black or African American backpacks.
For Christ’s sake.
I work in a PRISON. We are required to bring our lunch or any other authorized daily supplies (Water, prescriptions, etc.) in a department issued clear bag.
They are treating these kids like they are entering a correctional facility.
This is preposterous.
While they are at it why not remote controlled explosive neck collars like in the movie Running Man?
They are trying to turn schools into prisons.
