Discussing cities is like talking about the knots in a net: theyre crucial, but theyre only one part of the larger story of the net and what its supposed to do. It makes little sense to talk about knots in isolation when its the net that matters.
The 100 million city: is 21st century urbanisation out of control?
Cities are part of the system weve invented to keep people alive on Earth. People tend to like cities, and have been congregating in them ever since the invention of agriculture, 10,000 or so years ago. Thats why we call it civilisation. This origin story underlines how agriculture made cities possible, by providing enough food to feed a settled crowd on a regular basis. Cities cant work without farms, nor without watersheds that provide their water. So as central as cities are to modern civilisation, they are only one aspect of a system.

The world is overrun from the sh1th03 places like Latin America, South Asia, and China.
...California
The author has no idea why cities formed. They were close to the hub of business, they offered more opportunity than the farm and they had jobs. Cities are failing because the rivers and coasts are no longer the hub of trade and they are run badly, chasing away business and jobs. Chicago, LA and New York are becoming cesspits as business and jobs flee. Move more people to the city so we can all live crowded in poverty while the Al Gores and Global-warmists live on their massive country estates and fly their private jets hither-thither and yon? No thank you.
Increasingly, smart people can make a living far from the murder capitals where if you leave your car outside somebody will break into it for a box of tissues.
The frightening thing here is the technology is within reach that will allow a person rich enough to create and spread a contagion that will “make the world a better place.” Publishing the human genome was a mistake.
The Global Footprint Network estimates that we use up our annual supply of renewable resources by August every year, after which we are cutting into non-renewable supplies in effect stealing from future generations.”
So if global warming doesn’t pan out. ..
Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa): ‘We cant restore our civilization with somebody elses babies
He is so right; we are not breeding a new generation with links to the Bible, the Magna Carta, Declaration of Independence, etc.. Many new “Americans” have no concept of traditional American values as they relate to the founding of this country (marriage, taxation, self-reliance).
The entire population of the earth can fit in Texas with about 1,000 feet between each person. Just sayin
So, some Bond villain trillionaire will loose some sort of “mongoose flu” on the world, and we will have the 1919 pandemic x 25 or so, and that is our destiny. Great.
Doubtless he will have bought himself immortality by then, and we can all grovel at the base of his mountain, powerless to affect our future destinies. Who will be that Bond villian? Soros, Bezos, Musk, or Gates?
You first, Kim Stanley Robinson.
Lead the way, if you really believe what you are saying.
Goes back to Marxism. One of the tenants of Communism is that you have to kill off 1/3 of your population for it to “work right”. (Soviets in Ukraine, China, Cambodia)
It’s a cover for the mass slaughter that Marx plans for.
The solution was postulated years ago.
100% Birth Control.
Within 1 Generation every problem goes away.
Simple!!
I agree. Let’s go it by IQ...and how much tax they pay.

One of Tom Clancy’s novels deals with this idea.
Build a Stargate.
Colonize.
Put a population cap on key cities or even countries.
If no volunteers then do it by force.
I agree, too many people, too many stupid people making bad political choices or too weak to contribute to society.
Tenets
If you want to know what this guy really believes, read his Mars series. If you can however. I am a voracious reader. I can honestly say that up until I red Red Mars, I had finished every book I read. I literally could not finish the book. I’d read a few pages and it’d put me to sleep. 10 years after I started, I finally went back an read it and the two sequals, Blue Mars and Green Mars
The story is essentially communism on Mars. The viewpoints of the story wander around to various characters. Major characters disappear and are never referred to again. It’s the most pointless, poorly edited dreck I’ve ever read. It was a point of honor for me to ultimately finish it.
The series has three points of interest across all the books. When the space elevator falls(commies do it) and wraps around the planet, when the commies blow up phobos, because you know, capitalists are using it and the concept of Moholes.
Ok. We will start with Europe. Then see how we do from there.
Correct. And would you be surprised by this science fiction writers CV?

His initial Ph.D. advisor was literary critic and Marxist scholar, Fredric Jameson,[6] who told Robinson to read works by Philip K. Dick. Jameson described Dick to Robinson as “the greatest living American writer.”[4]
Robinson’s doctoral thesis, The Novels of Philip K. Dick, was published in 1984 and a hardcover version was published by UMI Research Press.
In 2008, Time Magazine named Robinson a “Hero of the Environment” for his optimistic focus on the future.

.... so no surprise that an English major has become another Bill Nye Science Guy by starting out as a fiction peddler devolving into a anthropogenic global warming Cassandra with the usual “If only....” we, meaning forward right thinking elites, can save the world from the less enlightened. Nothing new here, about a hundred years ago H.G. Wells flogged the original “scientists and engineers know best and ought to govern the world” tripe. His “Shape of Things to Come” described just that.
Good point and let me add that anywhere above 100.000 feet, you could barely make out any human activity on earth. These population bomb freaks are nothing more than vile Eugenic racists hell bent on killing most of the dark races since most of the growth is coming from Africa and parts of Asia.
