Once Robots Are Self-Aware, We Should Full-On Merge With Them, Says Michio Kaku

Artificial intelligence is getting smarter every day. While we have a long way to go before robots become self-aware, any robot that comes to know it's a robot could kick off the machine uprising that so many science-fiction dystopias warn about. Fortunately, there might be another way — at least according to renowned theoretical physicist Michio Kaku.

My Heart Is Human, My Blood Is Boiling, My Brain I.B.M.

"Robots are pretty stupid now. However, eventually they'll be as smart as a mouse, then a rat, then a rabbit, then a cat, then a dog. By the end of the century, they may be as smart as a monkey," Michio Kaku told us on the Curiosity Podcast. "But by end of the century, yeah, Elon Musk is right. They could become self-aware. At that point they're dangerous."

Dr. Kaku was referring to the alarming predictions about AI expressed by Elon Musk, who that feels artificially intelligent machines could threaten the human race in the future. Mark Zuckerberg, however, has differing views on AI. He's more optimistic, saying they'll be a boon for business in the near future. "I think both are right," Kaku offered. "I think Zuckerberg is right initially, in the short-term, because AI will give us prosperity, jobs, will reinvigorate the economy. In the long-term, however, we have to realize that we can't be naïve."

And if robots become self-aware in the next hundred years, as he predicts, then being naïve could make humans go the way of the dinosaurs (hint: they're extinct). Enter the future of the human race. "Let's take a look not at this century, but the next century, the 22nd century, when we do have self-aware robots," Kaku said.

“self-aware”...

I don’t think that means what you think it means.

He's talking about a century or so from now.

A lot can happen in a century.

You are forgetting Evolution.

No I'm not!

The discussion is about "humans" creating robots or computers with intelligence higher than ours.

So, can you tell me how "evolution" created humans and/or any species with intelligence? Progressively larger or progressively more complex brains. And, what makes for "awareness" of self or other beings or things?

Is intelligence about "emotions" too?

My thoughts exactly. Hopefully, resistance isn’t futile.

I’ve watched half a century go by.
I’ve watched AI go from “Game of NIM” to Watson, Siri & Alexa take IQ tests.
I’ve studied AI as a bright-eyed software engineer.

AI, as we do & will know it, is nothing more than searching data graphs for an objective criteria - a mechanical process.
That’s. It.

“Self-aware robots” aren’t happening with the technology we have, nor will have in the next 100 years.
They may become staggeringly efficient in searching vast data for complex criteria.
They will NOT be “self aware”.

Isaac Asimov wrote the series “Foundation” which depicted the rise of and rejection of androids in Earth’s future.
Even with his belief the end would be utopian, I rejected it because a wise and benevolent droid saves humanity by turning us into a symbiotic universe without individuality. Daneel the droid of note and another, Gaskin changed the laws of robotics on there own to better the good of their humans. Oh yeah, Daneel perfect himself by merging with a human child.

I don't believe a software program will ever become "self-aware."

I believe there is a quantum-mechanical element of consciousness/self-awareness that can never be recreated on a computer.

Just as quantum phenomena require a conscious observer, a conscious observer requires quantum phenomena.

Let me guess. This Kaku is an atheist - or at best, not a God-fearing person.

So conversation with a sex robot would be like a perpetual “who’s on first?” routine?
