After a few committed months of hot yoga at a studio in New York, Christina Rice had found her niche. So when the studio announced that it was offering teacher training, she signed right up. It was only when she arrived with her mat that she noticed something striking. There were 54 other women and men in the 10-week course, and not one of them looked like her. She was the lone African American in the class.

In a couple years you'll be putting those gals to shame.
In a similar situation, my friends and I have been going out to the Friday fish fries for several years now. There are no guards at the door keeping blacks our nor are there any by-laws or signs saying “No Blacks Allowed”. Indeed, everybody is welcome. Out of several thousands of people I’ve seen at these dinners there were, at best, a small handful of blacks in total. If they don’t want to come, well, America is a free country & if anybody thinks this is a microaggression, quite frankly I just don’t care.
Unfortunately, lifting heavy, especially for older people isn’t given as advice enough. It’s usually the opposite.
Nobody says you have to start with 500-lb leg presses. Just use a couple of 5-lb dumbbells. When they get easy, add a little weight.
And keep going.
Liberal bigots see a group that’s mostly white or men as, by definition, oppressive.
They’re self-segregating or demanding segregation on the basis of feeling oppressed by those others just existing in large numbers.
Yep. Just go poll the inhabitants of the self-segregated, no whites dormitory that they demanded from the administration and who cravenly complied.
There is a lot of charm in a spin class.
That’s the up/down of it.
There are reasons I live alone.
There were 54 other women and men in the 10-week course, and not one of them looked like her. She was the lone African American in the class.
I noticed the same at my local library. Away from the internet computers, of course.
Damn the hell right.
“If someone were to say theres too many black people, theyd be called a racist and get death threats. How is this different?”
They’d rather blame the racist boogeyman than look in the mirror. Life is easier when no shortcomings are your own fault...better for your self-esteem.
Never mind just national parks; I see few blacks on trails in state and county parks as well. At the same time, there has been a real push here to publicize the mass transit links to these places. If they aren’t interested, who are we to judge? At least they won’t get Lyme Disease.
Right, she noticed this socioeconomic racial disparity only upon reporting for work on the first day. Uh huh. Black folks as a group just ain’t into “hot yoga.”
She should join a swim team. Oh wait, never mind.
So instead of being proud about being a groundbreaker by being the only black, she complains about being the only black?
I doubt Jackie Robinson did that.
I agree, I just resent the authorities’ implication that if blacks aren’t in a certain venue, they need to be enticed and enabled to get there, given free passes, or whatever. Like you said, maybe they don’t want to be there!
