National Geographic acknowledged on Monday that it covered the world through a racist lens for generations, with its magazine portrayals of bare-breasted women and naive brown-skinned tribesmen as savage, unsophisticated and unintelligent.
"We had to own our story to move beyond it," editor-in-chief Susan Goldberg told The Associated Press in an interview about the yellow-bordered magazine's April issue, which is devoted to race.

Before Playboy was Playboy.
My memories of the SEARS catalog was the models wore black leotards with underwear on the outside of them.
I dumped NG years ago.
I have no friends left from the ‘80’s so I don’t know but suspect that many of them voted for the Kenyan muslim at least once. Liberal elite born and bred in Baltimore mostly.
The best Nat Geo years for bare bosoms were between 1920 and 1950. Balinese girls were the most beautiful, along with Polynesian women.
Nothing exploitative about it; these women were in their natural state, though it has been said that the only difference between Nat Geo & Playboy is that brown breasts are less sinful than white ones.
;^)
You don't even have to travel to exotic locales to study them.
National Geographic never struck me as racist. Who knew!?
Western Culture is EEEEEEEEVIL and you should feel bad!
Western Culture is EEEEEEEEVIL and you should feel bad!
They’re calling the magazine BET now.
“Torpedo t1ts”
Was National Geographic lying then, or are they lying now?
National Geographic was published for years in the US in Corinth, Mississippi. About 20 years ago they moved their printing operations overseas because it was cheaper. NG can go bankrupt for all I care as they are hypocrites.
we can not allow the truth to be known....that we still have backwards, low IQ tribal people living on earth here in good old 2018.....
I always thought it was racist when I was a kid. Black lady boobies were not the same as human boobies so you could find pictures of them in my Catholic school library. And you wouldnt get in trouble with the nuns unless you showed them to your friends and laughed and pretended to squeeze them in the pictures. I got in trouble with the nuns.
They still insert global baloney as the reason for the animals dying off. I saw a show about Alaska where the shows star said that glaciers are shrinking everywhere then he said except here in this bay that threatens to be cut off by a growing glacier....
They want it both ways and of course tax money to “solve” the issue.
I don’t know if it will help but I was referring to more recent issues of Nat geo.
Post naked ubangi women issues.
Anyhow,it seems to me one loses their claim to be a fully indigenous person when you shop at big box stores.
Props to the indigenous people who live like your tribal ancestry.
I'm confused...
Were these people filmed unobtrusively in every-day surroundings performing every day rituals and practices?
If so, what was "racist" about that?
On the other hand, were they forced to dress scantily and prance around singing "Camptown Ladies" for American audiences? That would be a different matter, but I don't think that's what happened.

Oops ..didn’t mean your Tribal ancestry.
Should be “their”
