How video games are fuelling the rise of the far right
The Guardian ^ | 12 Mar 2018 | Alfie Bown

Donald Trump’s claim, in the aftermath of the Florida school shooting, that these events are the result of violent video games, resurrects old arguments about whether young people emulate the games they play. The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) recent decision to consider video game addiction an official illness shows comparable concern. However, these responses demonstrate anxiety about the right things for the wrong reasons.

Gaming cultures are connected to violence – but should be considered in terms of the rise of far right political discourse and the prominence of “alt-right” misogyny and racism. While Trump is firmly on the right and the WHO may embody normative centrism, there is an aspect of gaming that should worry the progressive left.

The white male supremacy in gaming has been discussed in the context of the harassment campaign Gamergate and via the link between Trump and gamer message board threads on the 4chan website. Yet it’s not simply that many gamers are right wing, or that the right recruits gamers, but that the logic and pleasure of gaming itself has served and continues to serve the political right.

Games are ideological constructions which push a set of values on the user. Like television and film, they often support the ideologies of their context: in the Bush years, American games endorsed aggressive foreign policy; since Brexit, British games advocate isolationism or nostalgia for empire – and the prominence of anti-Islam games in the 2000s tells it all.

However, video games have at least two unique features compared to other media.

Video games have nothing to do with it. The young true conservatives (Southern, Pettibone, all) simply don’t want to be like most members of previous generations, especially my generation: Baby Boomers (but also most Gen-X-ers).

They rightfully want to rid our planet of unhealthy social and political policies and laws to allow the few more humanly intelligent members of their generation to survive. Enough waves of them have received the needed legacy of knowledge and insights to ease their transition before we go.

They were already defining some of the more obvious problems anyway. Human beings with the healthiest attributes tend to naturally resume healthy practices and to lead others, when necessity reaches a certain extent of urgency.

Have you played the fifth one? It looks beautiful, but the themes do kind of put me off.

Is it out yet? Last I read, it should be coming out sometime this month (if they haven’t pushed it back).

The anti-Christian ticks me off.. but the game-play is my taste ;^)

Well, the games did help. Maybe they helped much.

But the legacy was left in many other ways, too. There was a group of “post-feminist” girls following articles written by some of us during the mid-’90s, and there have been successive groups ever since.

At first, some of those who lacked enough contact with their own fathers followed parts of our (conservative men’s) writings and behaviors to render into a few style-related trends of their own.

Since then, they, and even many young men, have become ever closer to assuming the philosophies of our great-grandfathers and great-grandmothers among common Americans. The latest wave is near attaining the perspective of our nation’s founding fathers.

A few of them have become lost along the way to the dangers of vices and social mistakes left behind by our own generational peers (very saddening). But some of those who managed to stay on track are wonderfully tough.

Something surprising has also arisen over the past few years. Some of the current crop of young men and women are citizens of several other countries and are excited from educating themselves quite thoroughly in early American history. Amazingly courageous young folks. Some have have even come to risk their lives against really nasty characters of the radical left for the purpose of educating more young people.

I’m proud of them. The problems needing correction could have been solved within one generation.

That is, the problems needing correction could *not* have been solved within one generation. A few of us knew that, accepted it and knew that we would personally pay for spending much time for the rest of our lives on it.

The rise of the far left has given rise to video games that have given rise to the far right. Fixed, ok I want my Pulitzer now.

I’m not really sure. I can’t play these kinds of games on console, and something’s wrong with my PC, so I generally just enjoy them vicariously via YouTube. I assumed it had been out without any reason for thinking so.

If any thing video games have all a leftist slant in all their narratives

Secondly it is not the fantasy or stories in books or games that make mass killers, but the very atheistic materialist feeling these murderers have for attaining the kinds of privileges actors and politicians attain in real life!!!

All these kids hate fantasy, santa claus and religion. Even in Islam the Kalif is deemed to be atheistic whereas the followers are to be contented with heavenly privileges

>Or have Mario and Luigi “self identify” as Maria and Louisa. Would that make the left happy? Nope, they’ll just find something else to get triggered over. OOOPS, a “trigger” is a main component of...GASP!...GUNS, can’t say that.

Thye tried that bullsh** in Mass Effect Andromeda and no one bought the game. The more leftists you put on your game team, the suckier your game gets.

Most players per Wiki:
Call of Duty, Minecraft, Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros.

What do they have in common? Individualism. Your score is yours, and not the collective’s score. My grandson plays Minecraft ... a lot, probably too much ... It is male chauvinist. The females are there for the entertainment of the males, even though there is zero sex.

They sure are scared since their Stalinist slavery left leaning propaganda on TV is being replaced with self-defense video training and if played online, TEAM work. (I was just thinking about when 2 gamers met in person for the first time...AHHHH! we are doomed). Until lasers are installed on game controllers they really have no worries.

My controller would have to be upgraded for speed. I couldn’t get past the first level of a star wars game that my 14 yr old played. Gave up and played with graphic design and photo editing instead. Slow and steady.

It sounds like they resent video games because of their appeal to men. If the majority of customers had been women, no one would dare criticize.

This article is the reason I avoid liberal media, which is always intellectually flawed.
