After two days of the Conservative Political Action Conference, it became abundantly clear: The Republican Party is no longer the place for me.
I dont know what I expected, honestly. I knew that the Grand Old Party was now the party of President Donald Trump, that traditional conservatives such as Sens. Ben Sasse, R-Nebraska, and Marco Rubio, R-Florida, were now an unwelcome fringe and that stirrings of populism and nationalism were making the rounds throughout a changing party.
Trumps nomination dealt a massive blow to my political optimism, but for some reason, I still held onto the belief that the GOP remained a net good and that Trumps winning outweighed the white nationalist element of the party that keeps rearing its ugly head. Plus, my Hillsdale bubble kept me immersed in real conservatism.

Truth be told Bubba did a better job at enforcement than either Bush.
Glenn Beck has been swooning over the prospect of Sasse 2020
Rubio is not conservative lol.
That figures, doesnt it? Not sure Sasse will ever be seen in a political clutch with Beck, though. That three act comedy/drama of Cruz and Beck on the road didnt play so well over its run. Cruz played Beck like a boss, but then Cruz became a cartoon caricature himself, from the fall out.
Sassee and rubio? Dont let the door hitcha where the good Lord splitcha.
Bye Falicia. With conservatives like that who needs Liberals.
If the US government was formed by proportional representation, then people could shift from a populist party to a conservative party to a market-liberal party. As it is, in our system, we have a two-party system. Working within this system, Donald Trump was elected President. It is up to him, if it is possible, to unite our party and move forward.
Et tu, Hillsdale?
Beat you by 20 years. I did it after '92 when "read my lips, no new taxes" was a distant, broken promise and it was clear the GOP was lost.
Thanks!
You win!
Voted for Perot in ‘92 because I was sick of Bush also.
People say, well you gave us Clinton.
I say, no I gave you the GOP Congress of ‘94, as the Perot showing of 19% scared the bejeebers out of the GOP. As a result, Gingrich arose and the rest is history.
It wasn’t until Trump primary campaigns that I began to realize what both Bushes had really done to us.
And more will be revealed.
Congrats on seeing these rats so long ago.
The party of mccain and romney needs to go the way of the dinosaur, reflecting their leadership prior to President Trump. They are fossils of an era of surrender and treason. No more...
You've always been on your own.
I believe President Trump is demonstrating that we dont need political parties to elect our presidents especially when we realize weve created a corrupted government with political parties that are merely two cheeks of the same ass.
I guess you enjoy watching a certain Senator from FL in a motel room with ahhh 2 young males
Clown was never a conservative.
Rubio and Sasse? Really?
This writer is from Hillsdale? I expect better.
He sounds like some of our very own concern trolls.....they need to hook up and form the Waaaaaaaaaaaa! Party.....
