A Louisiana student has been investigated by police after saying a math symbol looks like a gun.
-snip-
"The students were working together, and a student made a math symbol of a square root sign, which kind of looks like a pistol. And he was helping a weaker student, and the student says, 'Well, that looks like a pistol!' And he just made a comment [like] 'let's just get to work before I shoot you with a pistol," Doucet said.
According to Doucet, the comment then spread throughout the school like gossip, and grew into a rumor that the student was planning to carry out a mass shooting like at a Florida school earlier this month. Police said that it could be interpreted as a threat when taken out of context.

"The student used extremely poor judgment in making the comment," the Allen Parish Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook. "But in light of the actual circumstances, there was clearly no evidence to support criminal charges."
"He committed no crime. He was the victim of the ole morphing of information [phenomenon]," Allen Parish Sheriff Doug Hebert added in a KATC interview.

I guess they got out of the homework.
I hope that kid doesn’t run into his buddy Jack while in the TSA line at the airport.
“Hi, Jack!!”
Somebody please sterilize that kid.
"And, at last, the Indiana Pi Bill, as it had come to be known, was defeated. Twenty years later, a triumphant Professor Waldo claimed "it was probably the Indiana Academy of Science alone which prevented [this monstrosity]" - while writing in said academy's own journal, I should point out - and that "if this deduction is correct then that one act of prevention was worth more to Indiana, jealous of her fair fame as she is, than all she ever contributed or can contribute to the publication of the proceedings of her Academy of Science.""

Government schools are evil.
Somebody please sterilize that kid.

For sure.
Speaking of carrying on good genes, during WW II, anytime a man in his Third Army received a Medal of Honor, General Patton ordered him out of combat. He wanted the man to go home after the war and have children who would carry his genes.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Finally, we start to address the issue of Weapons of Math Destruction.
If he has fear of pop tart shaped pistols and the square root symbol, he doesn’t belong here as it is a cruel world of macaroni, tide pods, and a host of other evil things.
Real threats are ignored, over and over, yet innocuous jokes draw a police response.
or Math Construction.
He must not be familiar with ‘rules for radicals.’
The map of Florida looks more like a gun than a square root symbol does, why aren’t the libs complaining about Florida causing mass shootings?
[[No charges, no crime committed.]]
One has to wonder though IF he had guns in the house, what would have become of him given the unreasonable approach of the police in the first place-
By all rights, the cops should have come to the school- heard that the kid said ‘the symbol looks like a gun’ - laughed about it and told the teacher who turned the kid in to stop wasting the police’s time by calling in NON ISSUES- and told that teacher to use common sense!- However, that is not how the police reacted- and they went way way overboard- It is NOT a crime to state that something ‘looks like a gun’, and that kid should have been off the hook immediately, as dictated by good old common sense-
[[”The student used extremely poor judgment in making the comment,”]]
Correction- whoever turned him in used extremely poor judgment!
Don’t you mean mass rootings?
This is just plain ridiculous.
If I were to say “red” in grade
school, would that mean the Russians are
coming? Can’t say “gun” in school?
What if the kid was helping dad
in the garage with a heat gun, caulking
gun, staple gun, glue gun, and tell
his friends, would the cops show up?
I guess history classes are a no go
with its numerous references to guns.
We defeated the British with spit
wads and rubber bands.
Government chooses weak targets to bully.
