Elizabeth Morris School in Cahokia, Illinois. The school was brand-new when I started first grade. My little blue-collar town had a great school district back in the day.

Cayuga Heights Elementary in Ithaca, NY. I still remember my teacher’s names 55 years later! Fourth Grade - Mr. Razzman (a no-nonsense guy); Fifth Grade - Mrs. Hatfield; and Sixth Grade - Mrs. Quirk. I remember Mrs. Quirk talking to Dad about my excessive interest in science! I still have a Fourth Grade diary that Mrs. Hatfield made us write.

After that, I went to Junior High School in downtown Ithaca and, honestly, do not remember a single teacher’s name. I remember having the hardest time figuring out what a “Home Room” was. Did anybody else have Home Rooms?

It was James G. Blaine school on the north side of Chicago, not far from Wrigley Field. Blaine was the Republican presidential candidate in 1884, losing to Grover Cleveland. The old brick bldg is still there and still operating as a public school. When I was at Blaine, the original, cast-iron and wooden desks with ink wells (which we used) were still there.

I went to a little school in suburban Los Angeles that was 60-70% Jewish. My mom tried to tell me that Jews were a tiny minority in the world, but I shook my head. “No way, Mom. I know that is not true. I go to school.”

You know you’re old when the hospital you were born in was torn down, the grammar school you attended is now a senior citizen housing complex, and the high school you graduated from was razed.

The hospital I was born in was razed then built in a different spot, my elementary school is now a "community outreach" centre for unwed mothers, my Jr High has been demolished and condos slapped up, but my high school has been expanded by 3X.

1953 entered PS in Duncanville, Tx (just south of Dallas):
Public school began each day with The Lord’s Prayer.
For those who didn’t know the words, the teacher had it written on the black board. There were no arguments, no protests. Everyone recited.

Christmas activities each year included a Christmas assembly in the auditorium.
Also included was a live Nativity for the town. This was considered a very special event.

The times, they are a’changing.
