1. Make all the students and teachers enter through one entrance.
2. Put a metal detector (or detectors) in that entrance.
3. pay an armed security guard to oversee the area.
(If it is a larger school maybe hire some more security guards and open two more entrances with metal detectors during the morning rush)
Home school your kids. Get them out of government sponsored indoctrination centers.
Exactly. I still had to pass my courses but I loved the fact that the teachers treated us as total adults. Which we were. None of this “I’m 18 and still a kid” stuff.
Adequately trained new government employee at every entrance of every school. Wouldn’t surprise me if the left feigns disapproval but eventually accedes since it would mean higher taxes and bigger government. No thanks. The kids should have been locked up after his initial threat. The FBI should be torn apart. And drug use should be scrutinized immensely.
Profiling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Single point of failure: all the students are lined up like fish in a barrel to go through the check point. Maniac with a gun doesn’t have to get inside the school to mow people down from a distance. There’s no way to completely stop this. It’s the liberal utopia’s wet dream - a morally corrupted society with unsolvable problems that require more and more laws by the elites to control the unwashed masses. End goal: stinking dictatorship.
It would be one part of security, but it cannot stand alone. Fire doors could still be opened from the inside, and a team like we saw in Columbine could defeat it thusly. There is no substitute for having an armed presence in schools, whatever form that ends up taking. It would deny shooters the opportunity to go from classroom to classroom killing along the way.
Eliminating compulsory education laws might be the single most effective way to roll back totalitarianism in this country.
IIRC the perps at Columbine left a window unlocked so they could get in the school unnoticed. Schools must have fire doors that open from the inside; that means someone already inside can let in armed murderers.
Student athletes, staff, maintenance people, cafeteria deliveries, all go in and out all day, the "shell" is easily penetrated.
You need defense in depth, someone to deal with predators that are already inside the wire.
Machine gun nests and concertina wire is the only answer.
— Obviously kidding around, but at my kid’s school they put a very formidable fence around the place, making it look like a prison. My wife scolded me because I made a joke about that, only because she wanted me to be mindful that we didn’t want it to be a place my kid DIDN’T want to go to. But then I told her, look how the kids are made to line up, head counts, etc. It’s like training for prison. With books.
Metal detectors are such an obvious solution and they are under 5K.

I was surprised it took 56 minutes before someone specifically mentioned metal detectors.
Metal detectors don’t detect all guns or knives. Plus anyone determined to pull off a shooting can just as easy do it outside as a crowd gathers at the entrance or as students leave the campus.
Also one guard may become busy or distracted. He may also be the first target if someone comes in with a gun, since the guard must respond in time to protect himself. Unfortunately, there does not appear to be a fail-proof system. This is similar to protecting airliners. While you may prevent someone from boarding the plane, they have already entered the terminal before the TSA checkpoint.
Anybody think this wouldn’t work?

Many differing processes or approaches could be used. The
question is “how much will the paying public support”.
Of course it is. As evidenced by the fact that we protect politicians with guns, we protect celebrities with guns, we protect our banks with guns and on and on.
Why wouldn't we protect our children and teachers with guns? Because the government funded schools have the power to refuse to do that. It doesn't fit their agenda and because it would work.
Is that what things are like in your place of work? Would you tolerate it if it were?
The only way to stop a shooting it to shoot back.
It is a lot of trouble and expense but what you have stated is what they have to do if they really want to prevent the shootings.
So here in Texas we allow millions of dollars to be used for football stadiums and athletic programs. Suggest that they have armed security guards to protect the children?
Oh we cant afford that, they respond!!
Plus we have to use taxpayers dollars to educate illegal alien children.
Its all about priorities, and safety of the children rank low on the budgetary list.
The solution is deterrence, but one I’m afraid we as a nation have lost the ability to project. For too long we’ve allowed ourselves to operate under the fiction that “the law” can take care of us. Some of us think a metal sign on a wall with a line through a gun is enough to deter criminals! We need to get back to a world where sheepdogs are allowed responsibility roughly on par with local law enforcement. Concealed carriers should be common EVERYWHERE, including on airlines, sporting events, and schools. Criminals should always assume any bad action will be met with equal force from the good guys, no matter where they plan to do harm. Self-defense and weapons’ training should be taught in school so that citizens can (if they choose) always remain pro-active and vigilant in protecting each other.
9/11 would not have been possible if there were armed citizens/pilots allowed to carry guns on those flights. But sheepdogs were not allowed to defend themselves, so the wolves had it easy.
Somehow the powers that be have convinced a good portion of this country that it is easier to ban all guns than it is to take some personal responsibility for your own self-defense. Things like fences, metal detectors, and controlled access only address the symptoms of this epidemic. It doesn’t change the fact that the insides of these schools would still be filled with unarmed students led by weaponless adults. Bad guys could cause fire drills, catch students on the playground, or hurt them at sporting events.
Either we allow sheepdog men and women 100% access to protect our children all the time, or bad guys will simply wait for the perfect time and place where they can have their way.
Most of NYC high schools which are in troubled areas have metal detectors at the main entrance. Students form long lines to walk through the detectors and send their backpacks through. There are still numerous doors all over the building which can and are propped open by students to let their buddies through, defeating the entire purpose of scanning. It is also possible to defeat the metal detectors by putting razor blades in one’s mouth or wrapping them in duct tape, for example. Also, students have been known to utilize broken glass (such as a broken beaker in lab) or large belt buckles, etc. as weapons. So I don’t think it’s possible to make schools super-secure. You still need multiple doors for fire safety, so that people could escape.
