The National Portrait Gallery on Monday unveiled portraits of former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama to a very mixed reception.
Even though Barack Obama praised Baltimore-based artist Amy Sherald for so spectacularly capturing the grace and beauty and intelligence and charm and hotness of the woman I love, many critics on social media slammed the rendition of the former first lady.
Their main question: Is that really her? [ ]
For the portrait, the former first lady was painted in grayscale a charcoal color with taupe undertones. Shes seated, with her hair falling around her shoulders, in a bold floor-length dress.
While most agreed the image was striking, Twitter went to war over whether it looked anything like Michelle Obama. The verdict varied widely, from positive responses to confused reactions to concern that the portrait did not live up to the subject.

I don’t know much about art, but it seems to me like a college art major could do better.
Her arms look fat.
I did not know Mapplethorpe did portrait commissions. Who knew?!
I think HIS portrait makes him look like a third world drug kingpin from a Magic Realism novel by Gabriel García Marquez.
Did they ever do any art restoration to try to fix that crazy woman’s work?
It was important that Zero be shown in the chair. That empty chair business really got in his head...............
Only if they are little trannies.
It appears the artists went to great pains to capture the spirit and character of former President and First Lady. Their ability to lead the nation, to improve the economy, and bring together the American people is suitably represented by this pair of unique portraits.
Two phony portraits for two phony people.
The main problem is that the woman in the portrait does not resemble Michelle Obama. I would not have recognized her as the former First Lady had I not read the article. The second problem â which is not a real âproblemâ, just something that I am rolling my eyes about â is that the portrait is informal, impressionistic, and amateurish. It is of dramatically lower quality than all the other portraits of Presidents and First Ladies. In fact, it looks just good enough to have won second prize in a public high school art contest.
The irony is it’s being criticized by fans of Mooshelle, that it doesn’t do her justice. I highly suspect they have no idea that the Obamas chose SJW black artists to do these. They chose poorly.
Well the only commissions Mapplethorpe is doing now are in Hell.
Sherald, first-prize winner of the Portrait Gallerys 2016 Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, beat out 2,500 other artists to paint Michelle Obama.
The Michelle painting actually isn’t bad, for what it is. The obama painting looks ridiculous with that background. It looks like a bad Photoshop picture committed to the painted canvas.
Liberals are racist and this portrait is anatomically too exact, so to speak. It does not have the media glitzy fake glamoring around it
So liberals will attack the artist to look PC
Is the portrait anatomically correct, with the appropriate bulges, or were they omitted?
To this very day, that ‘painting’ attempt makes me laugh!
It was so awful.
Tourism boomed in that little town after this happened.
I don’t know if they still reap any benefits or not.
N a field of poison oak.
at least the artist got one thing right... gadzooks, look at the size of those man-hands in relationship to the size of “her” head!
Makes her look Whiter - hope she can ignore all the extra “privilege”....
