Super Bowl LII will be a test for the NFL's season of discontent
LA Times ^ | January 29, 2018 | Stephen Battaglio

When Super Bowl LII kicks off next Sunday with the New England Patriots facing the Philadelphia Eagles, there will be more on the line than the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the winner. A season of turmoil and changing viewer habits has chipped away at what has long been the most durable TV franchise. As the league's marquee event, the Super Bowl has always been bigger than football, drawing non-fans who are partying with friends and watching the big-budget, celebrity-studded commercials priced at $5 million per 30 seconds that will be teased online and presented to an audience of more than 100 million viewers. Spending on Super Bowl ads has surged 35% in the last decade.

The Most Hated Team in the US v. The Most Vile Fanbase in the country.

Unfortunately, no. The Cowboys are the most hated and I still can't figure out why. Maybe Jones? But yeah ... Philly does have the most vile fanbase in the league.

‘Sold out’ long ago, and aftermarket tickets are $4k to $10k. Those record prices are actually down from when it looked like the Vikings could be there. Unbelievable.

“He (Woody) is one of only four Congressional Medal of Honor recipients from WW II still living.”

How much pandering is this? After they spit on the heroes from the wars we have been in and down the road lied about it for two years, and they want to have a real hero toss up their coin so they can make their millions while they do some more spitting to hide behind his name? How deep do they want to dig this hole? Wish it would cave in on them.

I’m one of those military members and I won’t be watching. And I hope that any military commander that authorizes a flyover of military aircraft is, at a minimum, counselled by high level members. They don’t deserve anything more than a crop duster or a flock of seagulls or pigeons.

Tired of seeing their joyless march into the playoffs every year and tired of seeing them in the Superbowl. Just tired of seeing them, period. The NFL will be a lot more interesting from a competitive standpoint when Brady and Beelzu-bill retire. I feel the same way about NCAA football and Saban.

At some point, it turns from “wow, what an excellent team!” into “enough already...” I got to that point with the Patties 2 Superbowls ago and Alabama 2 championships ago.

I am waffling on watching the game; I have seen enough Patties Superbowl victories since 2001 to last me a couple of lifetimes...

Only thing ‘super’ about this fumbleball game is the horseshit hype......

Why do people hate the Patriots?

My perspective as a Cowboys fan is because of a couple of things:

1) Going back to the invention of the tuck rule to help them beat the Raiders in the playoffs and start their dynasty the Patriots seem to have NFL favored child status with the refs.

Last week they get setup on a questionable PI for their first TD and get gifted a quick whistle on the fumble return for a TD. That is a 14 pt swing, they win by 4, very typical for a Patriots playoff game.

One or two games no big deal, every year the Patriots are in the playoffs it has gotten to the point where it is predictable. This is no different than NBA favoritism of their stars in big games.

2) People view the Patriots as cheaters who go unpunished as repeat offenders. No matter how much New England fans defend them that is what most people view them as after all of the “gates” they have been involved in and they have been caught and fined and lost draft picks and Brady was suspended for 4 games so the everyone does it defense does not work.

3) Personally, people are sick of the game play on the field that is personified by the Patriot offense of chuck it 5 yards to a receiver and complete 15 passes to score. It is not their fault they are the best at it but it makes for boring football.

4) As others have said, they have been too dominant for too long. People are just tired of seeing them in the playoffs. Everyone knows that they will win it again unless they are playing the Giants.

If you are a Patriots fan, none of this matters but that is why people hate the Patriots.

I was hoping for an all-LA Superbowl.

Two teams that even folks in LA don’t care about, playing in the dead of winter in Minneapolis.

Yep, 100%. I was the biggest Chargers’ fan in November-December.

I wonder if any of them will dare to kneel in front a CHM awardee? I kind of hope so, and then on the way off the field he walks over and punches the idiot(s)

That’s an extra $6,200 I’ve saved of NFL tickets this year.

Oh well, they do say the memory is the first thing to go.
Thanks for the correction.

I won’t watch the game either but I might watch the coin toss. I think the game is in Minneapolis(?) and I presume they have an indoor stadium, so I don’t think they’ll have a flyover, but I agree with you anyway.

I have boycotted all year.

The fact that neither team interests me makes it easy to avoid watching.
