German schools ‘make hyper kids wear 13lb sand vests to keep them in their seats’

The controversial sand vests, which weigh between 2.7 and 13lbs, are being used by 200 schools in the country despite some parents criticising them.

Schools say the vests, which cost between £124 and £150, are very effective at calming down hyper children and those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

They also say it’s a better way at tackling the problem than using drugs such as Ritalin.

LOL - that’s pretty much how I got down to 5 hours (recess, lunch, other activities). And yep, unless you plan a career with the WWF, you do have to learn, at some point in your life, how to sit still.

Sister Dorothy. Her reputation preceded her.

And when she *cracked* you one, you didn't tell your parents, b/c you would have gotten it again. Remember praying that she didn't call home? Those were real prayers.

“...which cost between £124 and £150...”

Bet I could supply all they wanted for 100 - 150 pounds each and I would throw in the sand for free.

Name he public school that any child sits for five hours, they barely go five and a half a day! Out of that five and a half there are recesses, nutrition breaks, lunch break and PE so let's not be silly.

I see it's easy for all the non accredited doctors here to make diagnosis and prescribe treatment. how telling that so many think that beating a child is so much more productive than say, exercise or God forbid giving the child who is probably bored something challenging to engage their minds.

Nope the obvious answer to too many is beat the education in, how sad.

Perhaps it's a delayed maturity thing, but some boys, especially, at 2nd or 3 grade level, are just like babies who can't control their movements and actually upset themselves with involuntary fidgeting.

They might calm themselves easier with weight vests. In a classroom environment, this would enable the kids around them to be more distration-free and keep calmer as well,.

I've seen something like that work. Didn't look oppressive to me.

But I'd have to know more.

The bigger picture is that boys at an early age, I think, should not be doing "desk work" at all, or very little of it. Let the little 'uns recite their addition and multiplication facts while jumping on a bed, or listen to Mom read "The Chronicles of Narnia" while they crawl and climb on a simple, improvised bedroom-constructed obstacle course. That was a genius homeschool tactic for us!

Little boys and desks are just not a good fit.

Having raised an ADHD kid, spanking doesn’t help. What does help is realizing that they need one heck of a lot of physical activity and make sure they have the chance to get it.

In 5th grade, the teacher called me and said he wasn’t behaving. I asked what changed. Well, he got in trouble so the teacher made him sit through recess. I laughed and told him he was punishing himself and needed to come up with a different punishment.

My DIL is an Occupational therapist in the schools, she uses them.

I was just thinking about Cesar Milan, he recommends saddlebag type things with weights for hyper dogs.

Long story short, my grandson managed to not do one assignment in a whole grading period n 2nd grade. The teacher said if he would do them all over the weekend she would grade them.

I ended up with him that weekend and we did 15 minutes at a time and he could sit or stand and then 15 minutes to play. We got them all done.

If they have a legitimate diagnose of ADHD or other medical problems that require the need for some kind of restraint so that they can learn spanking and fear is the last thing they need. Children do not learn when they are afraid. This is not about children who deliberately are destructive and disrespectful.
